I'm making my first trip to Helsinki, Finland and Tallin, Estonia and would like
to know what classes and milongas are available during the month of October.
Anyone have suggestions?

Many thanks,
Jan

For classes: Åke (rhymes with "worker") and Leena Blomqvist, Kasarminkatu 18, Helsinki. Phone +358 9 175615 (from inside Finland 09 =
175615). They give classes in Finnish dancing (including tango of course), international (ballroom) dancing and Argentine tango. They =
speak excellent English.

For a real taste of Finnish dancing, go to: Ravintola Wanhan Tanssikellari, Kaivopiha, Mannerheimintie 3, 00100 Helsinki. Closed =
Sundays, records Mondays, live music + records every other night till 2am, or 4am Friday and Saturday.

https://www.hok.fi/ravintolat/vanhankellari/ Click on Artistilista to see who is appearing, for example in October:

04.10 Mikko Kilkkinen
10.10 Marita Taavitsainen
17.10 Janne Tulkki
18.10 Erkki Räsänen
19.10 Kirsi Ranto

All very big tango stars, although I must warn you that the dancing is general ballroom (Finnish style), with only some tango.

The Lonely Planet guide favours the Ravintola Maestro, Fredrikinkatu 51-53, 00100 Helsinki phone (09) 612 9900
Closed Sunday and Monday, open till 2am or 3 Friday and Saturday.

Personally I don't think it's as good as the Wanhan, though the truly great Arja Koriseva will be there on 27th September (unfortunately I'll =
miss her).

If you can get to Finland in July, don't miss the Tangomarkkinat.

All this is a long way from Buenos Aires stylistically as well as geographically, but I think every tango enthusiast should investigate =
it, as Finland is now the only country outside South America with a live tango culture.

Sorry I don't know anything about Estonia.

John

Don't the finish claim that Tango is a finish invention? :-)

Anyway, I'd say that Tango definitly is alive outside South America
... and even progressing. At least here in Europe, where you can
study Tango Music not only at the Rotterdam Conservatory
(Netherlands), where Carel Kraayenhoof, Bandoneonista of Sexteto
Canyengue who played at 'the' wedding of the year (Prince Willem
Alexander of Oranien-Nassau (the dutch pince) and Maxima Z.
from Argentina, now princess in the netherlands) teached until last
summer, which is associated to the name O. Pugliese, and still
has Leo Vervelde, former member of Sexteto Canyengue as
Bandoneon teacher and head of the departement for world music.
But also you can study Tango in Paris, at J.J. Musalini ...

Europe, as in the old times, once again is the stronghold of tango
... not only in those terrible economical times in Argentina.

buenas tardes, listeras y listeros!

is there anybody on the list who could give information about tango
in finland? (not only fin-tango, but also arg. tango in finland *g*)

also about the tango-scene of Helsinki and perhaps it's surroundings
(what's the relativity of distances to travel for going out to a
Milonga for one night (with and without overnight stay)? [currently
for me in western europe it's about 250-300 km max.)

does anyone know whether nice tango events with nice dancers (to
dance with, I do not really need the big names) are scheduled in that
region for mid august 2003?

tnx in advance!
christian
