As Johann (Janette Mandanus <foremast@GMX.NET>), replied, I think the
degree of rudeness in the tango community varies considerably by country
and city.

In traveling and dancing tango, Susan and I have been given very warm
welcomes by the tango communities in most cities we have visited. We have
found tango dancers worldwide to be enthusiastic about meeting and
greeting tango dancers that happen to be traveling. We have been hugged
with friendliness by strangers, picked up at our hotel and driven to tango
parties, taken to dinner, and been invited to stay in the homes of tango
dancers. I cannot think of greater friendliness. (I like to think that
we are similarly friendly in Texas.)

Yes, we have also encountered occasional rudeness at milongas in our own
city and in others, but when one compares the little rudeness we have
encountered with the genuine open hearts and friendliness of the people we
have met through tango, it seems as though the glass is well more than
half full.

With best wishes,
Steve

I just got back from Mpls, MN. Everyone was so nice to me. Lois extended a
kind overture to come visit & I did. We had a brunch in my honor (lots of
Tango men there ladies!) & did lots & lots of dancing. Salsa, Tango, West
Coast, Cajun, Swing, little Scandi folk dancing.

Mini trip report:
-----------------
* Need to change spelling of Ore-GONE to Ory-Gun
* Its soooooooooo cold there, how do people live there?
* Sun Tango night in middle of upscale resteraunt!
* Rockin' Cajun/Zydeco community, down-to-earth as you get. Its true
"Let the good times roll" & they do
* Great Tango music & dancing
* Its really cooooooold there. Its 49 & raining in PDX right this 2nd.
People look like there cold; I'm going to tell them about MN

I agree that the tango scene is often very friendly.
I would suggest, though, that one not infrequently
gets better treatment as a visitor than as a known
face. Folks who are anxious to behave in a way that
makes outside people report that their tango community
is very friendly sometimes do not achieve the same
generosity when dealing with the beginners in their
own town. Human nature, of course, to apprecite the
unusual (not to mention that out-of-towners are often
serious dancers who are more amusing to dance with).
But I have learned that the group which describes
itself as "open, diverse, and friendly" may not be
telling the truth on the homefront. Maybe we could
try a little harder?

OK, this is Lois from Minneapolis, MN. Yes, we have a very nice,
non-pretentious, welcoming tango community here, and I'm really glad to have
had the opportunity to host a great dancer like Rick. We'd be happy to do
the same for other dancers, but Rick is not helping when he mentions that
it's a little chilly up here! Yes, the temp. ranged from 2 to 20 degrees F
for his visit, but he didn't mention that he brought only a light jacket,
walked everywhere even though I offered him my car, and took advantage of
the brisk air every time he got overly hot at a dance. And the snow is
really beautiful!

Rick, are you still upset that I didn't take you for a car ride on an
ice-covered lake?

Ah jeez, yah, I have a great time. She's a wonderful & gracious host, that
Lois. I really did have a wonderful experience. We have the same appetite
for lots of different dancing, no question. That's rare to find, we could
spend the whole night dancing with each other & love every minute of it. She
barely knew me from Tangofest & took a chance on inviting a nut like me to
the deep freeze :o) So Lois, this is a little public, but all I want is a
place in your heart, your house & your home. When global warming reaches MN,
I'm there. I just saw Fargo, am reading Lake Woebegone days & it all makes
sense. She sees Garrison Keillor on the streets of Mpls.

See you soon sweetie...
xoxoxo
