Subject: Tango-L Collaborative Website
Hi all!
After watching this list for years, I've noticed that some discussions seem
to work very well in this type of text-based forum and others don't. Here
at Georgia Tech, I managed to convince the creator of collaborative websites
(Mark Guzdial) to set up a "coweb" for the tango-l community. Essentially,
it's a website that anyone anywhere can edit. It seems to me that this
would be a great place for building up information from the community that
should be archived. I could envision it containing information from the
discussions of new albums or places to dance or the history of tango or
whatever else you want. I got it set up, but it's up to you guys to fill
the space if you want to. Further questions or comments, please contact me.
To get to this website and begin editing it, go to
https://coweb.cc.gatech.edu/tango.
Thanks,
Jim

The answer is yes and no. There is quite intentionally no power structure
here. Depending on how you look at it, that means that there is either no
moderator or that everyone is a moderator. I'm certainly aware of the fiery
personalities in tango, but I tend to believe in the basic good of most
people. In all of the cowebs at Georgia Tech, we've never really
encountered any problems, but this is one of the initial forays beyond
academic discussions. My experience with online communities, however, leads
me to believe that social solutions will tend to arise to solve social
problems. People are just creative that way. :-)
On a more technical level, it's important to realize that all contributions
are linked in the logs to the computer that the contribution came from. So,
in the event of a major problem, we can generally figure out who did it with
reasonable reliability.
As long as I'm writing about the coweb, I have received a number of
questions like: Does it have a page for X? or Can we add new pages? The
answer is that anyone can add as many new pages as they want whereever they
want. So, if you don't see a page for X, it's probably not there. That
means, it's up to you to add it.
Thanks,
Jim

Jim,
Great idea, but does it also mean that a kindly Moderator will be keeping
his/her finger on the fiery tango pulses of those participants who would
like
to sneak in some of their less than desirable comments? As you can tell, our
current Tango-L is virtually squeaky clean and that's thanks to OUR
Moderators.
