Subject: a tango show in Buenos Aires
Esquina Carlos Gardel has been open for a little more than one year for
dinner with a tango show. Last night I had the opportunity to see the show
through the invitation of Carlos y Alicia. On weekends, they are full to
capacity (400). No detail has been overlooked in the construction and decor
of this elegant restaurant, and the attention by the staff is superb. All
seating provides an excellent view of the stage.
Dinner begins at 8:30pm followed by an hour show starting at 10:15pm. The
sextet performs continuously on an elevated stage above the main stage where
the singers and dancers perform. I was delightfully surprised to see two
young couples who danced in Forever Tango when I saw the show in Chicago.
Now that Marcelo y Veronica Bernandez have a two-year-old daughter, they
work in Buenos Aires rather than touring with a show.
I saw Carlos y Alicia on stage for the first time during my 1996 visit to
BsAs. They have been performing together for 14 years, and are, in my
opinion, the best tango partnership on stage. They are a passionate and
charismatic couple. They command the stage. They give an electrical charge
to the audience with their dancing. There is communication between them and
with the audience. You name it, Carlos y Alicia have done it--shows,
movies, instructional videos, documentary film, festivals, etc. They have
been performing at Esquina Carlos Gardel seven nights a week since its
opening. www.esquinacarlosgardel.com.ar
Next week Carlos y Alicia leave BsAs for a month of teaching in the United
States. First they will be in Los Angeles for Tango Fireworks and other
classes (6/27-7/18). Afterwards they will be in San Francisco (7/19-7/25)
and finish their tour in Detroit (7/26-7/28).
