Subject: Tango singers (female)
Hi list -
I'm interested in hearing more female tango singers (living), and wonder if
people would tell who their favorite living female tango singers are, or who
they think is worth listening to.
To kick it off:
Adriana Varela is my favorite, for interpretation, musicality, risk taking
and the tobacco smoked quality of her voice...her "Malena" knocks the rest
of them out of the ring. There's no one like her.
But there are likable others...
Silvana De Luigi (Di Luigi?) has an album (Afiches) with some modern tango
on it that is really nice. she has a good cabaret style,a supple voice and
sings a great version of "Negra Maria".
Who else is out there singing and recording that you like, and what do you
like about their work?

Roxana Fontan is a wonderful contemporary singer -- she was in various
companies of Tango por Dos and its incarnations. She has one CD available
through Zival's on line.I heard that she married Junior, had a baby and is
currently not active in her career. Al and I hope this is not true (the
career part) as it would be a great loss. She is also quite a good dancer.

A contemporary tango singer I like is Mimi Koslowski. I had the good fortune
of meeting her and listening to her at the Kennesaw College in Georgia. She
has a very nice voice and a very compelling style. I actually have one of
her albums "Nueve tangos y un candombe". You might want to look into her
music. BTW, although not a tango, she does a most passionate rendition of
"Ojos Verdes". Lamentably that is not in the CD I have, but it was a
memorable performance that we were fortunate to witness.

Thank you everyone for your reccomendations. Plenty now to look for.
yes, I do remember seeing Roxana Fontan in "tango" -- she was trying to
synch up (vocally) with the film clip of Tita Merello. It was a nice moment
in the film.

I have been looking for and buying tango CDs on the internet recently, and have noticed something curious.
All the singers that have released CDs in the last few years are female.
That is obviously not true (?). But in all my searching and surfing, I have come across nothing but female singers - Sandra Luna, Lidia Borda, Silvina Rocha, Maia Vares, etc.
Could it be that male singers are afraid or running into the same fate as a few of the better known ones: Julio Sosa, Jorge Falcon and Gustavo Nocetti, all passed away at the peak of their careers.
But then again, there's Alberto Castillo, who lived to almost 90. And both Roberto Goyeneche and Edmundo Rivero had long careers and lifes.
Where are all the modern male tango singers?
Search from anywhere on the Web and block those annoying pop-ups.

The only ones that I can think of off the top of my head are:
Brian Chambouleyron
He has a great voice and can be heard on these two albums:
Le Canta A Gardel
(https://www.tangostore.com/busqueda.php?idxinterprete353)
Patio De Tango (https://www.tangostore.com/cds_detalle.php?idx19) On this
one he sings a duet with Lidia Borda on the most beautiful version of
Palomita Blanca.
Daniel Melingo .. he is definately an aquired taste... His style is a very
old style.. people who like Canyengue should definately check his music out.
He does sing too much... but then again.. he is a singer. I do wish he did a
few instrumentals.
Tangos Bajos
(https://www.tangostore.com/cds_detalle.php?idxI7&busq=melingo)
Ufa! (https://www.tangostore.com/cds_detalle.php?idx43&busq=melingo)
All the best,

Walter "Chino" Laborde comes to mind. He sings with Sans Souci, Fernandez
