How about Miguel Calo?...a really corny schmaltzy valse by Miguel Calo with
Beron singing.

Yes, Calo for me too...For valses, I like Calo on "Bajo un Cielo de
Estrellas" and "Pedacito de Cielo" to help set a light romantic mood. Lalo
Shifrin's "Corazon de Oro" and "Flores de Alma" (with its great vocal duo)
from the "Tango" movie soundtrack always go over well. Pugliese's "Desde El
Alma" is a favorite when the intensity goes up.
For tangos, Calo's "La Cantina" (Beron again) is a favorite. I also really
like Canaro's "Gricel" - another schmaltzy treat. For a more modern sound,
El Arranque's "Adios Pampa Mia" is also good, in my experience - light,
insouciant, and fun. Many people like the light and sweet (no bando)
version of "Por Una Cabeza" from the Tango Project, available on the "Scent
of a Woman" soundtrack. Piazzolla's "Ciudad Tango" takes a frenetic
rhythmic quality in the beginning and mellows it out into a lush romantic
space very sweetly.
For alternative tango, with more romantic intensity and less schmaltz, Haris
Alexiou4s recording of Loreena McKennitt's "Tango to Evora" is always a sure
bet.
All the best,
