On the other hand, who says ya have to dance every
dance? I'm not trying to start a fight. I love the
classic music. Those arrangements, ensembles, and
musical performances were one of the initial
attractions for me. I prefer dancing to that over
anything else, low fidelity notwithstanding (which
doesn't bother me a bit). I like the DJ's who play
classic tango music.
On the other hand, I also enjoy funkier milongas like
the ones I attend at New York's Triangulo, for
example. I hear music there I would never hear
anywhere else, like the song I was looking for
recently on this list. (Thank you everyone who sent
me so much info about Alfredo Marcucci!) I don't
necessarily want to dance to all of it, but I always
enjoy hearing it. I wouldn't know about it otherwise.
I'm happy to sit around and listen at that time. In
fact, even for classic tango music, I don't
necessarily want to dance to all of it, either because
of stylistic preference or just my particular mood.
Undanceable music never "kills" a milonga for me.
(Neither does dance music I don't dance to, like
swing, salsa, hustle, or now chacarera.) Personally,
I think milongas should be chock full of smoking,
drinking, socializing, dating, and all sorts of
carrying on that doesn't have anything to do with
dancing! Oh yes, dancing too. "To enjoy life to the
fullest, take big bites." (Robert Heinlein's quote,
not me.)
(All right, I'm not totally without my own snotty
gripes. Mine pertain to certain live music. I can't
bear musicians who can't (or won't) play in time or in
tune, and electric bass is the wrong axe for the gig.)
