Subject: Envy

Dear friends of Tango-L,

My feeling is that when somebody does something positive (being the result
of his doing: good, excellent, mediocre or poor) we should encourage him, so
that he can continue to improve and reach the maximun of his possibilities.

This is a good North American trait that i always admired.

Envy is the desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation.

Why are you envious: Because other people are so much luckier, smarter, more
attractive, and better than you.

Your punishment in Hell will be: You'll be put in freezing water.

Associated symbols & suchlike: Envy is linked with the dog and the color
green. (I do not know why). :))

Medieval theologian Thomas Aquinas said of Envy:

"Envy according to the aspect of its object is contrary to charity, whence
the soul derives its spiritual life... Charity rejoices in our neighbor's
good, while envy grieves over it."

All of a sudden we are flooded, (poluted rather), with the messages of
people that we do not know, people that never wrote anything interesting,
constructive, useful, those whose names were never heard in the world of
tango or in any other world as far as I know; the ones lost in the mass, the
mediocre, the envious, the resentful, the negative.

They appear suddenly like locust clouds, like hyenas ready to destroy, to
soil what others have created with perseverance and sacrifice.
To this wagon of the unknown we have to add the few well known to the list
that jump on, as soon as they can express their negative and destructive
views.

But there is justice after all: They are going to spend eternity in freezing
water. :))

Anton and Natalie, (I do not know them) are very young, and danced in Buenos
Aires for a public of great tango dancers who liked what they did.

Something, good and constructive, they deserve encouragement.

Daniel (I know him, we have been both friends and enemies )

is an elegant tango dancer who has his own particular style, different from
anyone else's. He has been teaching tango with success in Argentina and
abroad. He has a daily program on TV in B.A. where he teaches tango. He
created an Argentine Tango list.

He did something, good and constructive, he deserves encouragement.

Envy is a sin.

Best regards, Sergio

Mr. Vandeker,

I thought your message a little apocalyptic, I sensed even a Biblical Wrath
with all these locusts, frogs and hyenas...Well, with the hurricanes, killer
flu, earthquakes, melting polar caps, wars, etc.. it may get to anyone ;-)

My unknown author cannot compare with your Thomas Aquinas, but the sentence
"Those who can do, those who can't - write, teach, etc." is a good truism
nonetheless. It teaches humbleness.

So we are blessed these days with an increase in Tango-L messages, from new
writers. Some are uncouth, but this is not a reason to disparage them. We
should welcome, influence and guide them. They may have new ideas - much of
the essential Tango discussions have been completed by now, these are in the
archives and a few select websites.

I hope you'll agree with me that the Tango exchanges on the list deal mostly
with trivia, and mostly for amusement (the Lucia thread is a prime example).
The role of the seasoned Tango listers is, today, and In My Humble Opinion
(IMHO for the net newcomers), to guide the new members to the copious stored
material, answer to ad-hoc queries and deal with Current Events.

I only hope the flood of new messages will continue.

Seth

PS I believe that placing Stage, Fantasia dancers on pedestals constitutes a
disservice to the social Tango communities. The experienced dancers know the
difference between the Tango Fantasia and social. Not so with the new
dancers, who may have gotten their image of Tango from the movies and shows,
only to have these ideas further reinforced by unchecked highly appreciative
comments on this list.
