My partner has vacation time to use b/4 the end of the year and has decided to dance in Europe for the first time. He will be flying into Amsterdam on Nov. 4 & returning from same on Nov. 25. He intends to travel to Berlin & Paris as well as other recommended tango "hot spots." We have been "surfing" for a week now, and the options are overwhelming. He would like recommendations in any or all of these cities on:
Best tango venues,
Reasonable & safe places to stay close to tango venues,
Best transit between these cities (i.e., rail or plane or drive),
any other information that would make his 3 weeks easier so he can enjoy dancing!!!

Hi Phoebe,

Holland is very big for tango. The Tangomagia event attracts lots of people
from all over, but it seems that the dates you mention are not good for
that. There are lots of milongas all over Amsterdan as well as other cities
nearby. Nijmegen is a great tango place where "El Corte" attracts lots of
tango dancers from all over. The Mercure Hotel in Nijmegen is a popular
option for lodging and they even offer a tango discount (or they did at one
time). The tango scene in Copenhagen was smaller but we had fun there too. I
don't know about Germany from personal experience but I hear good things
about it.

Unfortunately the dollar is extremely weak in Europe right now so count on
lots of "sticker price shock". Everything from hotels to restaurants, taxis,
trains and planes are very expensive. Do some searches of tango in Europe
(our web page https://www.tango-rio.com/Links.htm) has lots of links to info.
For ease and speed, air travel is very good. For shorter trips the trains
are very good. I personally would avoid driving because of the hassle of
parking.

The level of dancing in Europe can be very good. There are lots of great
dancers doing the rounds over there so that can be great fun. I'd strongly
suggest packing very light because lugging more that one small bag around
the train stations, airports and streets is a huge pain in the neck. Take
new, unmarked dollar bills and credit cards. The bills must be completely
unmarked, they'll not accept any bills with marks on them at the money
exchange places. Visa and MasterCards are accepted almost everywhere and
they are very convenient. There are internet cafes everywhere so it's easy
to stay in touch (in Amsterdam some of the internet cafes are also pot and
hashish dens). Check with the Barbizon Tulip and see if they'll give you a
tango rate. In the winter, they seem to be amenable to upgrading your hotel
room to one of the many apartments they have around the hotel. That'll give
you much more comfy digs with kitchen, etc.
