Subject: First milonga experience
Prior to visiting Buenos Aires last year, I had been talked through the
ritual of making eye contact, etc., which filled me with dread. (It
brought back distant memories of being a callow 16 year old, making the
long nervous trip across a dance floor - with the ever present threat of
the infinitely longer humiliating walk back, if the target of my
attentions said "no".)
We walked into the first thronged milonga, and amongst the many female
faces, I immediately recognised one - a lady with whom I had briefly
spoken, earlier in the day at a group class. I nodded in geeting to her
- and to my astonishment, she nodded, stood up, and walked towards the
floor. I hadn't even put my belongings down - and I had a dance already.
After that lucky accident, it didn't seem quite so threatening any more
- and for the next two weeks, I happily nodded and eye-contacted my way
to many a dance.
