1702  Gotan Project playing in Starbucks

Subject: Gotan Project playing in Starbucks

Sitting in Starbucks today, I heard the familiar sound of a bandoneon. I
asked the barista to lookup the artist information on their CD player, and
he informed me that it was "Queremos Paz" by the Gotan Project.

A few months ago they were playing a Piazola (sp?) tune, but I was unable
to get the name of the song that time, as the barista in that store didn't
know how to obtain the information from their CD player.

Sure! This particular Starbucks is at Miramonte and Cuesta in Mountain
View CA (between San Jose and San Francisco). The music they play is
provided by Starbucks corporate (on special DVD/CDs) and AFAIK is sent to
all Starbuck stores, but each store has wide latitude over which disks they
play.

for a listing of some of the music they provide to the stores. You will
note that Queremos Paz by the Gotan Project can not be located with their
"search" feature. They only list CDs they sell, not the DVD/CDs they
provide to the stores (which are compilations of several CDs, totaling over
100 songs per disk, on a special DVD-like format that only plays in their
special player). I spent quite a lot of time unsuccessfully attempting to
find information on the Piazzolla piece when I heard it playing at
Starbucks a few months ago. :-(

Gotan Project is being played everywhere, not just Starbucks. I hear it in restaurants all the time, and just coming back from Chicago they were piping it through the sound system in the lobby and elevators.

Yes, Gotan Project (and Argentine Tango music in general) is being played
everywhere. The reason I noted it is being played at Starbucks is that
someone at Starbucks' corporate office decided that AT music is suitable
for playing at hundreds of Starbucks locations all across the US (or around
the world). That's a big accomplishment for music that has often been
considered not appropriate for playing "to the masses", music that has been
considered "niche" music, or too flamboyant, or too foreign. Hearing Gotan
Project at Starbucks is a sign that AT is becoming more mainstream. I
don't know if this is a good thing or not. :-)
