Subject: a handkerchief is handy
I was watching my favorite tango program on television the other day which
has interviews with couples who have danced socially in the neighborhood
clubs for many years. In this particular program, Juan C. Belsito and Nina
were talking about their experiences and demonstrating how
they dance in Villa Urquiza. Juan (75) mentioned that he carries a folded
handkerchief in his left hand while dancing with Nina. The handkerchief
absorbs the perspiration from their hands rather than having sweaty palms
and he uses it to wipe his brow.
He reminded me of the milongueros with whom I've danced who always use a
handkerchief in their left hand. One was Victor Alberto Ramire (who
passed on May 2001). Victor offered me a clean, pressed handkerchief
to wipe my brow after a dance with him. We were dancing on a hot January
afternoon in a place that wasn't air-conditioned. He had a perfumed
handkerchief for himself and another one to offer me. Ismael Heljalil
is another milonguero who always holds a handkerchief while dancing. With
one always in hand, wiping the brow between dances is quick and easy.
Summer is coming soon in the northern hemisphere . . . so gentlemen, get
your handkerchiefs ready. Your partners will appreciate it so much.
