Subject: III Campeonata Metropolitano Tango Salon -- Part III
The prize to the top couple is $3,000 pesos. The top three couples will
represent the city at the finals of the III Campeonata Mundial on August
21. Those who placed 4th through 10th will compete in the semifinals of the
Campeonata Mundial, August 12-20. All of them received a diploma and dance
shoes.
10th place -- Maximilliano Gomez and his young partner with ballet feet
9th place -- Carlos Cardoza (65) and Griselda Brunini who dance regularly in
the
milongas. Her mother danced tango, and her daughter was there to cheer her
in the finals. Carlos promises he'll wear a jacket and tie during the world
semifinal rounds.
8th place -- Raul and Mirta. He told me she asked him at the last minute to
dance with her at the May 5 qualifying round in El Arranque. He said, why
not? He told me he enjoyed the experience. We're glad that a few couples
from the milongas made the finals.
7th place -- Anibal and partner. I've seen him regularly at Lo de Celia and
other downtown milongas.
6th place -- Couple #10 of round 2
5th place -- Couple #18 Sandra and Daniel who qualified in Champagne Tango.
Elegant couple whom I've never seen before.
4th place -- Gerardo Quiroz and Maria Eugenia Cuyas -- At least 60, Gerardo
dances with his left hand raised over his head while he looks down at the
floor and hardly moves in the milongas.
3rd place -- Couple #27 -- a young couple who I marked down with no
musicality or rhythm whatsoever.
2nd place -- Couple #6 -- a young couple who separated a lot and couldn't
dance to the music.
And last, but certainly not least, first place was presented on stage to
Couple
#28, Pedro and Graciela. They were escorted to the floor where they danced
alone for the thousands who came to view the finals. Solo Tango was their
to film every round, so you'll be able to watch excerpts from the
competition if you have satellite TV. It was gratifying to see a couple in
their
late 60s, who have obviously been dancing together for years, recognized as
the best representatives of tango de salon. They were the favorites of the
audience. I spoke briefly with Pedro, before the decision of the judges was
announced, to tell him that he and his partner were Number One for my
friends and me as well as the audience. They never missed a beat and danced
creatively. He modestly said, well, we'll see what the judges decide.
I will be there on August 21 to see Pedro and Graciela compete in the finals
of the III Campeonata Mundial.
