On a july 25th, 1995, Don Osvaldo Pugliese left us. Eight years after, we may say there is a " Galaxy Pugliese" conformed by gifted musicians of Argentina and all over the world that keep alive their genius.

I would like to quote part of an interview made to Julian Plaza , who played with Pugliese and later left with other musicians to made his own Sexteto. This was first published at La Maga on July 1st, 1996.

-? Do you considered the Maestro as another one of you or he was something that was over you?
-He was a person that kept a relationship with everyone of us as an equal, and his humbleness was remarkable on all his attitudes and the way he took to organize his orchestra. His handling was as a cooperative and he always distribute the money according with a rule approved by all of the members. There were even some times, when the fans followed him and made the clubs to burst with crowds , but he never complain that from some time Osvaldo Ruggiero earn more money than himself.
-? What do you remember of the fans of Pugliese?
-My sisters were fans of don Osvaldo y when they went to dance they told me that there were different groups that went following the places where the orchestra played. Some of them like to follow Alberto Moran, other with Jorge Caldara . But all this sub groups gathered and were die hard followers of the Maestro, like a soccer fans club that go with his team everywhere.
-? How was the tournei on Rusia and China?
-I think it was one of the first time that a tango delegation traveled to that places. It was in 1959. In Russia we stayed four months and one month on China. We received testimonies of greetings and respect. Everyone wanted to take a photo with the Maestro. One of the places we played was at a Theatre in Beijing and it was curious that every theme we played, we were asked to play it again as a bis.
This means that we have to play twice the complete selection of themes. Considering this situation actually , having all this years passed, I think it must have been an order of the political chinese party, otherwise, it has no explanation.
-?How were the rehearsals with the orchestra of Osvaldo Pugliese?
-Rehearsals were made with a few words and a lot of work. Sometimes , the Maestro stop everything and said :"Che, that part, it will be necessary to change, it doesn t sound good", then we all know that this mean that the writer of the scores would have to take the rubber and improve the lyrics.
Each musician tried to impose what he write as arrangement and , of course, he wanted that the arrangement was played at the performances .But fortunately at the orchestra there were many exchange of ideas with Ruggiero and Balcarce .... of course, always the last word was from Pugliese.
All the musicians of the orchestra that made arrangements , gave the best of themselves and their contributions stay to be widely acepted , as the arrangementes of Piazzolla or Argentino Galvan with diufferent orchestras , and Osmar Maderna with Miguel Cals.
-? What does it mean La yumba in the career of Pugliese?

La yumba is the total expression of the Maestro. it belongs to him totally , even the arrangement . I think that , although he had already many succesull themes, this tango is the model of his school. That composition concentrate all the creativity of Osvaldo and launched him to the road of the true Pugliese.
