When I was a child, old people often stored their clothes in "mothballs" -
some sort of foul-smelling chemical intended to keep insect pests away and
which had a similar effect on me. Marina Palmer is far too young to remember
this custom. (Unless it is still observed in Argentina - does anyone know if
it is?) I think she is referring to the metaphorical stench of death -
something a young and beautiful person such as Ms Palmer should never have
to think about.
The book is a salutary reminder to us coffin-dodgers that those young and
gorgeous creatures who delight us by clinging to us in close embrace are
just showing respect for their elders, and would really rather be with
someone as young and gorgeous as themselves; and we must not abuse their
good nature.

John,
Don't be fooled: Marina Palmer represents the ideal
brainwashed result of the youth oriented product
marketing, with a dose of class-elitism thrown in for
good measure. She despises you and me, as she makes it
clear in the following excerpt:
"All Argentines frequent cafes, even the old, who in
other countries have the decency to stay out of
sight."
Do you think that she includes in her opprobrium the
rich old ladies whiling their days away at quaint
little cafes in New York City or London?
In the Latin countries the family structure is still
largely intact, with all generations within having a
role to play and being well respected. We see them all
in public - and such a pleasure it is to behold them,
this humanity - unless one has ideological and mental
blinders preventing the understanding of the mores and
customs of a society.

Two quotes.
John Ward:
"The book is a salutary reminder to us coffin-dodgers that those young and
gorgeous creatures who delight us by clinging to us in close embrace are
just showing respect for their elders..."
Really? Would it happen if you were not an outstanding dancer for starters?
Marina Parmer:
"even the old, who in other countries have the decency to stay out of sight"
Are you decent enough to heed this particular piece of "salutory"
prose? Or you ignore it for a delight of clinging to those young and
gorgeous creatures (in which case you should definitely listen to it)?

Yeah, well, except that she reports that she had to lie about her age and
make herself 10 years younger in BsAs, because everybody thought that 31 is
way too old for a woman in tango... Remember that episode when somebody
thinks of choosing her as a partner for a stage act in BsAs, finally asks
her about her age, and when she answers with honesty, walks away in disgust?
And where she describes, that for dancing on stage, men think she is not
only way too old but also too short and too fat (5 foot 2, and weighing 105
pounds ?), and that they all want a 17-22 year old "stick insect"?
Ever thought about the fact that these people are making her ever more
panicky about being in her thirties already, and that she may be taking a
sweeping revenge on them for this attitude? The first man who tries to
seduce her after a milonga is a 65 year old (smelly) lounge lizard...
In my observation, often 50 year old men in tango think, that a woman over
34 is too old, I didn't know that in BA the limit is lowered to 22....
