If you have never experienced "tango zone" feeling, you have not experienced
tango in its most powerful form. The zone has nothing to do with steps and
everything with communication. It's the place were steps (feet) are curiosly
absent. Leaders can enter that realm too by the way. Naturally they have to
do it with eyes wide open.

Not really, not 100% of the time anyway.
When the entire floor is moving to the music and the leaders around me are relatively good dancers, I have danced with my eyes closed for considerable lengths of time. Other times, I open them to quickly look around, then closed them again, so I end up having my eyes closed more than having them open.
Of course, when I do dance that way, I am careful not to take big steps, to stay in my lane, and almost dancing on the spot, exchanging places with my partner. I also take advantage of so many people not dancing right into the corners and stay there while the rest of the traffic passes us by.
The corollary to this is that when I dance with my eys wide open, I am usually having a bad time. I am usually forced to do so by leaders charging all over the floor, leaders who stop to teach a particular step, or those who attempt to pass me the second I leave a 6 inch openning between us and the next couple.
Close-eyed tangos (sometimes anyway) to all.
