RickfromPortland recently mentioned Color Tango (I like them) and Orquestra
Fernandez Fierro. Rick, I don't share your enthusiasm for dancing tango to
non-tango music, and I don't care much for Piazzolla and really
"modern-sounding" tangos, but I really hear you when you complain about the
sound quality on the recordings of the Golden Age tangos that I love.
Consequently, it's really a pleasure to hear a modern orchestra playing and
recording in the Golden Age style.

A couple of weeks ago in Berkeley I had the great pleasure to hear one such
band - Glovertango from Austin. The group that performed for us was Glover
Dill on piano with the Tosca String Quartet. They did a great job of
projecting the full sound of a tango orchestra even without string bass and
bandoneon. Sometimes they add those instruments, and that must be something to
hear. Really, this is one of the very best tango bands I have ever heard.
They played without amplification in a small room. They played for dancers -
mostly Golden
Age maybe with one or two original pieces. Some folks danced, but about half
of us just sat and listened, in awe.

They have been playing two or three times a week in Austin, and I am really
envious. I'm sort of miffed that you from Austin haven't been telling us about
them, but I guess if I had a treasure like that I'd want to keep it to myself
too.

Their web site is https://www.glovertango.com/home.html They have some CDs.
Unfortunately for me, except for the piano solo CD, they seems to mix original
compositions with the Golden Age stuff on all the CD's. The original
compositons are good, just the other is more to my taste. There are some
samples on the site. Music lovers and tango festival organizers, check them
out.

Rick is right: "Los Reyes" are impressive. Unfortunatly their fantastic
(danceable) powerfull sound often gets detoriated in Baires by bad bad
amplifier technique. [I was happy to have 'em live in Baires in March this
year: Once with terrible local amplifiers(I left due to pain in my ears),
once with good equipement at CITA's last night: Fantastic!]

Organizers should more invite them overseas ... and please the guest by
providing "Los Reyes" with the best acoustical equipement.

As far as I know they do not have many CDs out. :-(

Really great recording, but it contains just 10 tracks/28mins of music.
