Greetings,

Until one learns about it, one of the frustrating things about buying tango
CDs is not knowing what is good or bad and not wasting your money. You have to
depend on the person who compiled it and even then it is a personal selection.
But still you have to buy it because there may be no other recordings
available of that artist. I always wondered about the ones that didn't make it on the
CD. Also just like here in the states many songs that were "hits" are not
always the best songs, but that's what you often find on compilation CDs.
It is unusual to find recordings of the complete works of a tango artist so
that is why I am posting about this one that I found. Hopefully it is a trend.
It may now be in stores and classictango.com and others may have it online but
I just found an eight-CD set of the complete recordings of Anibal Troilo at a
store here in NYC. It also has a mini-biography and a number of photos in the
booklet. It is on the El Bandoneon label, two four-CD boxes (the booklet is
the same for both), EB 306 - 309: 1938-44, and EB 311 - E14: 1944-50. The songs
are chronological so the first box is the best, but there are some good ones
in the second one also. Troilo was quite a prodigy and his best songs were his
first ones recorded beginning when he was 24 yrs old. It is a little pricey
in the stores, $46. per box but still it is a good find.

Note: Imagine a box set of the complete recordings of Canaro - 3700 songs!!
at 25 songs per CD, that's 148 CDs!! :-)

cheers,
Charles
