I am a member of this list for quite few years now, and generally enjoy
reading various postings. Lately, a lto of political discussion is
taking place here. While Argentina and Buenos Aires are close to the
heart of many members, it's not an Argentina discussion list! I am sure
there are many other forums where one can tackle those national topics.
Richard Lipkin (NewYorkTango.com) and I run a Yahoo group -
NewYorkTango. In order to avoid inappropriate postings, we moderate it
and make sure that no political/spam etc. postings are submitted.
Perhaps it's time to moderate this list as well?

Dear Censor,
As a dancer who on occasion suffers from the musical choices of New York
Tango DJs, I do reject your call for a censored forum. Tango-L list is lots
of fun, even if sometimes tedious, sometimes maddening, and sometimes boring
as is now. But surely it beats all other Moderated forums I joined and then
quit.
You should have called for people to join your list instead.

No, no, no. This list was moderated and censored at the beginning and it was
horrible because of that. Moderators and censors will inevitably run
roughshod over other people's right to express their opinions ever when they
are totally on topic.
As others say and have said in the past, the Tango-L can be maddening,
boring, interesting, insulting or annoying at times. However, it's much
better, informative and interesting now than it was ever under big brother's
watchful eye and heavy hand. Interestingly enough, it stays much more on
topic and there are fewer virulent posts and ad-hominem posts than before.
If you or anyone else finds the Tango-L, as it is, to be intolerable, please
unsubscribe and/or form other forum(s) more to your liking. The free flow of
ideas and words is what makes this forum useful and interesting. I don't
like to be muzzled or have my thoughts, ideas and opinions moderated,
censored or oppressed in any way.

I've got one! I was recently surprised when a woman told me that she was
wondering whether she was learning the appropriate style of tango from her
teacher (this is always a tough question for me to answer) I asked her if
she enjoyed his style of dancing when she danced with him. She replied that
he never danced with her.
Does this happen to other people on the list? Have you chosen a teacher
without ever dancing with him/her? If so, why? How can you teach tango
without dancing with your student?

You can pick an instructor by watching how they dance. If you want to move as they do, have the same posture, and a similar "vocabulary" of movement ("steps", "moves", etc), it makes sense to seek their instruction.
During lessons, the instructors I've had have either led, or had me lead things with them as my partner. I got over the "but, he's a guy!" thing without too much trouble. However, I don't expect to "dance" with a male instructor. (Hmm, sounds dialogue from "Tango Bar".)
All of my lessons have been group lessons. Us guys usually practice with the women in the class, but often have to partner with other men because there are fewer women than men.
So, when men pick other men to learn from, there is no dancing with the instructor involved, at least in my experience. And I think that is most often the way it is.

I guess I didn't make it clear that this is during private lessons. How do you

Sometimes couples want to learn tango, but they are uncomfortable dancing
with someone they're not married to. Sometimes this works out OK, more
often not too well.
I have a class of about 20 about 2 weeks into a 6 week beginner class,
and 2 out of 6 couples are staying together. One couple have been
dancing everything but tango (ballroom, swing, salsa) for quite a while
and they are looking so nice I am going to start taking them aside and
giving them a little extra to do. The other couple are having a much
harder time, so I am going to see if they would be comfortable trading
with the first couple who are their friends.

In my impression, a teacher does that mainly when he is tired and/or lazy. I
resent being made to do ochos against the wall during a privada, I
appreciate some walking drills, but a whole lesson without ever dancing
together? Nah...

I've often seen it written that Tango is a metaphor for life . . .
How often is it that all of life's activities are on-topic? There's lots of interesting and boring stuff around the edges and on the sidelines. Seldom does any activity move in a straight line.
