Subject: Re: North American Tango Festival Update

It is difficult to put together a comprehensive list of festivals. Any
such list posted in a public place such as Tango-L should be considered
provisional and subject to refinement by the participants in the forum.
Relying on information directly input into his webpage by the organizers,
Tobias Conradi currently lists 15 tango festivals in North America over
the next 12 months -- https://festivals.tango.info/2006 . Using other
methods, I listed 24 North American tango festivals scheduled over the
next 12 months --
https://pythia.uoregon.edu/~llynch/Tango-L/2005/msg03397.html . But
Gülden has a good point, I did overlook four of the festivals listed on
Conradi's tango festival webpage. In addition, I received a private email
telling me of yet another tango festival in North America.

Festival de Tangophilia, January 19-22 in Durham, NC
https://www.tangophilia.com/
2nd Boston meets New York Tango Weekend, April 28-30 in Boston, MA
https://bailatango.com/boston/
5th Carlos Gardel Tango Festival, May 21 in North Hollywood, CA
https://www.teatrodelasartes.com/
TangoJoven2006, June 30 - July 4 in Minneapolis, MN
https://www.tangojoven.net/
Minnesota Heartland Tango Festival, September 8-10 in Minneapolis, MN
https://www.heartlandtango.com/

Interestingly enough, the available information for each of the first four
events (which are listed on Conradi's tango festival website) do create
challenges for anyone wanting to compile a useful list of North American
festivals. From the sketchy information available about Festival de
Tangophilia on its own website, the organizers MAY be stretching the
definition of festival. I could not confirm that the teachers consist of
more than one touring couple and one local couple--even though the event
is less than two months away. For the 2nd Boston meets New York Tango
Weekend, Conradi's Tango Festival website provides conflicting information
about the dates. The Annual Gardel Tango Festival appears to have been
less than a 2 hour event in 2005. The listed website for the TangoJoven
festival isn't functional.

With best regards,
Steve

The "sketchy" information available on the website states:

"Featuring Fernanda Ghi & Guillermo Merlo (from Buenos Aires via Las
Vegas), Tango Lorca Quintet (from Kansas City, MO), Jackie Ling Wong (from
MA), Victor Crichton (from FL) and more!"

not including the local couple, Gülden ÖZEN & Jason LAUGHLIN.

I am not sure what Mr.Brown's definition of "festival" is but we certainly
are not trying to reproduce "more of the same". Other than the maestros
Fernanda Ghi and Guillermo Merlo, all the other instructors listed have
been teaching local classes and workshops as well as workshops in other
communities and states over several years. They might not be seeking the
level of advertisement many other local instructors who also teach in other
communities do but this doesn't have anything to do with their quality as
instructors or dancers. I believe the most convincing parameter about any
instructor's teaching skills is the dancing skills and the progress rate
their students can have. And at this point, I am not sure if there is any
recognition for Mr.Brown as a public referee in judging others whom he
doesn't even know or care to know as instructors.

As another point in discussing the definition of a "festival", I guess
providing live music is not the concern of many festivals. For us, it is
important and we do our best to include a five piece orchestra, Tango
Lorca, well-known by the fans of live tango music, in our festival.
Fortunately enough, their violin player Christine Brebes will be playing
for us after spending 2 1/2 years in Buenos Aires playing with many
orchestras there.
We will also make the best use of having the unique combination of Fernanda
& Guillermo along with Beau Bledsoe of Tango Lorca by holding a musicality
workshop (that they have taught together before in Kansas City). I guess
this is a rare opportunity for many other festivals' participants.

Last but not the least, it would have been really helpful if Mr.Brown could
be more inviting and clear about his listings when he posts them. In his
first posting, I couldn't find any statement inviting the members of this
list to join his effort and complete/add/change what he could gather in
order to have a more complete/close to complete listing of North American
tango festivals. It is certainly possible for anyone to form a list of
tango events, festivals or workshop weekends, that he/she cares to attend.
However, if someone is making the effort to list all the North American
tango festivals, then simply listing them by being open to additions and
changes would suffice. Personal judgements are not necessarily called for
when it is simply listing the events as they are announced.

Wishing you all more tango events that more people can enjoy,

Subject: Re: North American Tango Festival Update

Nowhere in my posts will you find that I claim ultimate authority in
determining what differentiates a tango festival from a workshop. I was
simply trying to provide a list of tango festivals in North America. I
also clearly stated that I overlooked some of the festivals listed on
Tobias Conradi's tango festival webpage. I did not specifically invite
other members of Tango-L to join my effort and complete/add/change the
information I provided, but it is common for discussion groups refine and
update lists provided by one member. The civility with which such
additions are made depends on the individual participants. So far, we
have added five additonal events to the initial list that I compiled.

Perhaps defensively, I sought to convey just how how difficult it is to
compile a reasonably comprehensive list of tango festivals. For the list
on his website, Tobias Conradi relies upon the organizers to input their
information. So far, he has captured 15 North American tango festivals
scheduled for the next 12 months--missing 13 of the festivals I had
listed. I captured 24 of the North American tango festivals scheduled for
the next 12 months--missing 4 of the festivals that he has listed. Given
the method by which the Conradi list is generated, no one can blame anyone
but the organizers for any event that hasn't been listed.

In addition, unless one is simply content to provide a list of events that
the organizers claim to be tango festivals, anyone making such a list must
determine what constitutes a tango festival---and what separates it from a
weekend workshop. For guidance, I am inclined to use past discussions on
Tango-L about the topic. These discussions have suggested that events
considered tango festivals ought to last several days, have the classes
and milongas integrated into one purchase package, feature live music
and/or multiple djs, and have multiple teaching couples (mostly from out
of town) who offer simultaneous classes. A significant minority also
thought that a large number of attendees should come from out of town and
that a hotel package ought to be made available. A departure from these
elements tends to mean that the event is more likely a workshop than a
festival. I think it is fair to say that an event that lasts only a few
hours might not really be what we think of as a tango festival. I think
it is also fair to say that a teaching roster that consists of only one
well-known couple and one local couple stretches the definition of
festival, unless the local couple has a national reputation for teaching.

All of this, may mean nothing for the event known as the Tangophilia
festival for which I offered the opinion that the organizers MAY be
stretching the definiton of a festival. According to the web information,
the event lasts several days, will have live music and mulitple djs and
could have simultaneous classes. In addition, the classes and milongas
seem to be integrated into one package. (No hotel information is
provided.) From the web information, what I could not confirm is that the
teaching roster consists of more than one touring couple and one local
couple. The webpage for the event lists participants but does not tell
what roles they will have. I know Jackie Ling Wong and Victor Crichton
are well-regarded teachers in their own communities, but both are much
better known for travelling to dj. If they are participating as djs
rather than as instructors, the event will have one well-known touring
couple (Fernanda Ghi & Guillermo Merlo) and one local couple (Gülden Özen
& Jason Laughlin) as instructors. If Jackie and Victor are participating
as instructors that presents a somewhat different picture.

Steve

I see several "clusters" encompassing many tango "festivals", i.e.
events that are bigger than a "locally-oriented workshop".

(1) National Festival with Big-Name Dancers and/or show couples .
Dinner-shows, workshops, live orchestra, Hotel location. 50% or
greater attendance from wider region or around the country.

(2) National Festivals with emphasis on Milongas & Dancing. Good DJs
and lots of good dancing are as important or more important than
workshops. 50% or greater regional or national.

(3) Special Regional Festivals or Weekend. Two or three teaching
couples, invited DJ(s), special (additional) milongas. 20% from out
of town, might not be national.

(4) Regional or Community Umbrella Festival. Local or Regional Open-
House, or Two-city Exchange. Use all the local teachers (or region or
two-city). 20% from out of town.

(5) Tango Exchange/Road Trip. Get two or four carloads of tango
dancers and drive to the next tango city for a weekend of dancing.
Maybe 20% regional, but primarily remains local..

COMMONALITIES

All these events have in common three special things you can't get
from a normal weekend workshop or normal weekend of dances:

(1) Much bigger attendance than normal; strangers from out of town.
(2) An intensity of tango experience crowded into one weekend.
(3) A unity or shared experience with the attendees.

I think the actual learning experience, the classes themselves, do
not define a festival, although they may be the primary focus of the
advertising, mainly because they are essential for financial success.
Milongas alone have a hard time covering airfare and fees for good
DJs, cost of live music or ballroom rental.

DIFFERENCES.

For me, the size of the local community vs number of visitors
differentiates these events.

A large tango city like New York has so much going on, that 50 extra
people in town might not be noticeable.

Denver has two dances a week with 120-150 people, so let's say 40
extras create a Special Regional Weekend, and it takes 100 to make it
a National event. This weekend our Christmas party will probably have
300 at the Saturday dance, two show-dance couples, workshops, live
music and maybe 40 visitors from out of town. I still wouldn't
classify it as a festival, but certainly it is a "Special Weekend"

Karen Whitesell's "Meet in the Middle" is completely made up of
visitors. Even if she only had 60 people, you would have to call it a
festival because of the shared experience with so many new people.

SUCCESS

Success for the organizer is mostly about attendance and finances.
(Yes, these rewards only repeat if people have a good time).
Therefore the strategy, marketing and attendance need to be in synch.
It does no good to pay a bunch of big-name dancers if you can't get
sufficient national or regional attendance to support the event.

Success for the attendee is about having a great tango experience.
Maybe that means seeing all your favorite great dancers perform,
maybe that means getting lots of great dances with friends or new
friends from around the country. Maybe it just means experiencing the
energy of 200 or 300 dancers in the same room instead of 50.

But the big thing that draws people back time and again (like a moth
to a flame?) is the intensity of the tango high you get by three or
four days, 8 or 12 hours per day of tango.

When it is good, it is very, very good. A transformative experience.

I think Tom Stermitz has an excellent idea in recognizing that there are
different types of tango festivals. Some regional festivals may not have
many differences from an expanded workshop, but big festivals are quite a
bit different from a workshop.

Following up on Tom's suggestions, I made an initial stab at classifying
the various festivals. I started with four categories: National Festivals
with Big-Name Teachers/Performers, National Festivals with an Emphasis on
Milongas and Dancing, Various Regional Festivals, and Festivals Yet To Be
Classified. Of course, additions to and reorganizations of the list are
most welcome.

Dear Stephen Brown classifies certain tango events regarding
the teachers-Maestros, this is a tough task to try.
There are other significant characteristics of "tango festival" and "tango
congress".
-Who is target crowd (nationwide or regional, close embrace or salon etc.)
-How long does it runs? (2 days or longer) )
-training or dancing oriented
- any musicians? DJs?
-What level of publicity (in a hotel, or local dance venues)
-What's its purpose?
As Tom mentioned how much does it cost $$$

there might be more criteria i cannot think at the moment.

Another issue with the drastic differences between American Tango Festivals
and European Tango Festivals.

The Taxonomy of Tango events is a difficult topic to cover!
for instance *TangoJoven* *2006* festival is being designed to run 5 days
(June 30-July 04) in Minneapolis.
some features;

Dear All,

I certainly can see Derik's point. However, in the
last few years, we have been plagued by a spate of
instructors from Bs As in scruffy T-shirts, baggy
jeans and trainers who move like automatons, claiming
they know it all. Not very encouraging for the
developement of "gusto"....

Cheers,

Andy.

Not all the time and not everywhere. There are some well known festivals
with workshops located in sport stadiums, elementary school gyms or dance
studios and a number of events are not-so-dress-oriented.

Obviously it is easier (and therefore cheaper) to find beautiful (I guess
you mean: old and stylish) buildings in Europe than in the US. For instance
we have a milonga every Sunday at a place built in the early 1900s in the
most elaborate secessionist style. Most Americans just trying to find their
jaws when they come there. Most of the locals don't dress up for it. It is a
public café of a cinema afterall...

Cheers,
Aron

Reminds me of the first time I went to one of the big milongas in Berlin:
the "Volksbuehne", an old theater in East Berlin, rediscovered after the
reunification. The milonga happened in one of the halls upstairs: a ballroom
that, for all I know, may have been there since the 1920ies, with a
scratched up old wooden parquet floor, chandeliers hanging from the ceiling,
antique couches covered in old pink velvet, with wooden legs painted in
gold, the room half dark, with some additional red light bulbs.. Tango music
playing from scratched up records from the 1950ies, and women in little
black dresses and high heels, waiting to be asked to dance.... I looked
around and could hardly tell which decade I was in. It certainly didn't look
like the Nineties, more like something that happened before I was born.

According to the website it was built in 1890 (my mistake). First as a

of the century.

Reconstruction was done in 2002.

The exact name is Urania Mozi which means Cinema "Urania". However, the
proper name of the institution is Urania National Movie Theater. It also
hosts the National Academy of Film Arts.

It was built by Henrik Schmahl in venetian gothic and eastern moorish style
on the request of a private enterpreneur. The name "Urania" is a
coincidence: The Urania Scientific Association used (rented) the building
for only a few years, but the name stuck. It is located on one of the
largest avenues of Budapest.

There is a milonga every Sunday in the café for the third year now. However,
we can only remain there because it is a state owned and run institution,
with little interest in squeezing out every buck from the venue.

If you happen to come to Budapest, make sure you check out the place (you
can also meet me there, usually I hold a practica btw 7pm-8pm before the
milonga), we don't know how long can we dance tango there...
