Subject: Nuevo Tango - is it the music or the dance?
I was talking to a student this week and he told me he had been talking to a
dancer who liked "Nuevo Tango", then gave him the name of an orchestra that
plays it. I always thought that Nuevo Tango was a way of dancing tango that
broke some of the traditional rules of tango, and that music not from the
Golden Age, or music like what Gotan plays, was referred to as "alternative
tango music" or some other such thing. What's right?

As many people seem to use the terms:
Nuevo Tango refers to a method for analyzing how to dance tango that has
given rise to a style of dancing tango commonly known by the same name.
New Tango refers to recordings by Astor Piazzolla or orchestras who took
his direction in playing tango.
Neo Tango refers to some styles of contemporary music for dancing tango.
Neo Tango includes both Tango Fusion and Alternative Tango.
Tango Fusion refers to the integration of tango music with other rhythms,
such as music recorded by Gotan Project, Bajofondo or Carlos Libedinsky.
Alternative Tango refers to the non-tango music that is used for dancing
tango.
