I think many cultures have this kind of "competition" in one form or another. This is a form of comedic entertainment where only your wit and basic musical skills are needed.

In China, for example, the participants would start by playing a percussive instrument to mark the rhythm, and then composed short rhymes commenting on whatever topic that may be relevant at the time. The rhymes are usually comedic or satiric and are meant to get a good laugh from the audience. Someone else will respond by doing the same. A third person may join in, and the rhyming will go back and forth.

Unfortunately, with the introduction of mass entertainment like movies and such, this form of diversion has gone the ways of, well, the silent movies, and the art form is fading away.

The Inuit (Eskimos) had a very similar tradition of "song duel".
