Hi all,

I've been reading the list lately with some degree of disappointment. While
I can understand people's strong held opinions and beliefs (after all, tango
is a very "passionate" subject ;-)), I've watched some threads degenerate
into invective filled, ad hominem rants. I respectfully suggest that no
matter how much one might disagree with another forum contributor, calling
them "idiots" and "pigs" is hardly the best way to carry on a reasoned and
civilized discussion.

Just my $.02,

Manuel

Dear Manuel, Daniel and All:

When people have nothing intellectual to add to a
conversation, the insults and four letter words appear
to fill the void in their thought process.

Thank you for pointing out that the people on this
list who talk about being civilized all the time are
usually the very ones who are not. These same people
probably dance tango as well as they can think.

Derik, you're totally clueless, aren't you... you're the one who
started the insults by demeaning the Denver Tango Festival... if you
have nothing nice to say keep your loose lips zipped.

Actually, Derik has a point there.

Also: why retribute any insult with another one? That is definitely not
conversation.

I cannot emphasize more: why not stop playing social games at the levels of
10-year olds (who started what, who is the troll etc.) and start discussing
some tango instead?

Maybe Derik has a view on some forms of tango and some approaches that is
insulting to others. I mean: I do have my own reservations concerning his
letters, however there is no need to start attacking him for it. Argue with
him ON the subject, that is fine.

It is no suprise that for several months the membership of the list is
stagnating: 10-20% of the posts are not about tango - they are personal
remarks to each other and other mails discussing what kind of behaviour
would they expect from the others. No-one wants censorship (moderation) of
any kind...or at least people say so, while everyone tries to promote his
own sense of ethics (which shows that they want rules - rules built by
THEM). The list is supposed to be self-moderated. Apparently, it does not
really work, no matter what a few loud (and well established) voices say.

If you have seen the series Ally McBeal, I must recommend the brilliant
concepts used by the character Richard Fish... Especially the one: "bygones"
[if something happens that would need a complex discussion (but has no real
impact on anything), apology, or he gets into an awkward situation etc., he
just says "bygones" and fast forwards to the next thing]

Cheers,
Aron

Greetings to all the Sane Members of Tango-L From The Tango House,

This is Chas your irreverent reporter writing from The Tango House
located in The Mile-High City of Denver, Colorado. Here at The Tango
House we could not help but notice Derik demeaning the Denver Tango
Festical ("Festical" is a very happy testicle. In a sentence you could
say: "My festicals are grinning thigh to thigh at the prospect of
another night of spectacular tango at that wonderful tango venue, The
Tango House." Happy Argentines testicle are "Fiesticals".), but Derik
was not at the festical so I'm not sure how he feels qualified to judge.
He also called into question the quality and the very validity of tango
in Denver but I'm reasonably sure he has never tangoed in Denver so
again, he is not qualified to judge.

On 8/26 Derik compared The Tango House to a McDonald's hamburger. But
alas, Derik has never been to The Tango House so yet again, he is not
qualified to judge The Tango House.

Just thought you'd like to know.

With best wishes from The Tango House,
Chas "Could not possibly care less, just wanted to do the festical bit"
Gale

Greetings Derik,
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to write "The Tango House" on
tango-l 9, no 10 times! Keep up the good work.

Dear Richard,

As I was saying, demeaning an event is not a personal
insult....hello ???

At least I did not purposely set up an event to
compete with Denver and then try to put Denver out of
business, by drawing people away. This is exactly
what happened with the Mt. Vernon event vs. the long
established New Orleans event. Give me a break.

We need intellectual content here, not a bunch of
competitive evil minded brainless nonsense. Thank
you.

So it's ok for Derik to do it, but when somebody bops him on the nose
with a rolled-up newspaper for it, it's not ok. Nice double standard there.

If you'll notice, Derik never argues logically with people - he's the
classic internet troll. He makes some outrageous or patronizing
statement, and then sits back and watches the rest of the list fight
about it. And then gets his little nose bent out of shape when people
point out he's not house-broken ...uh, pardon me, "insufficiently
socialized."

On the other hand, a moderation system similiar to that used on some
other popular forums might raise the signal to noise ratio and give a
sutble slap on the wrist to folks like Derik, who maybe after seeing
99% of their posts moderated -1 Flamebait might just get a clue.

Uh, no. The character of Richard Fish on Ally McBeal is a card-carrying
lout. He says "bygones" when he makes some egregious faux-pas or comment
and the rest of the characters are getting ready to hand him his head.
Richard Fish is *not* someone to emulate.
