Subject: Photos & Videos of Milonguero's at Milongas

I have waited a few days to allow the heat of this item, videoing at
milongas to dissipate. Its time for a posting from a third party.

By chance I know the major players in this situation. I have met and
swapped emails with both Janise and Rick. Regarding Tango they are both
very knowledgeable people.

However, just a few weeks ago while in BsAs I was fortunate enough to be
there at the same time as Rick and his lovely wife Alejandra. Through
them I was introduced to many of the Milongueros of BsAs. With them I
attended many milongas and at most of them Rick had his video camera
which he used, gathering footage of the milongueros dancing.

On every occasion, I saw approaches being made to both the organizers of
the milongas and the milongueros requesting permission before any
filming was done. I was also there at El Beso with them, early at an
afternoon milonga and witnessed some milongueros actually requesting to
be videoed.

On one occasion where the Milonguero wished to be videoed but the
organizer was not so sure they agreed to dance only in one corner of the
floor and Rick was to video from the edge of the floor excluding the
rest of the room.

Rick and Alejandra were always mindful of the intrusive nature of what
they were doing and took every chance to minimize its impact on people,
only the ambient lighting was used.

Rick and Alejandra are not video hooligans, they are nice considerate
and caring people

Following conversations with Rick and Alejandra about why he is
gathering all this video material, I am totally sure his intentions are
to gather historical archival footage of some of the greatest tango
dancers the world will know, so that the images will not be lost

He is not doing this to make money

Without work like Ricks, how will we tell our grand children of these
wonderful dancers?

There are many of the milogueros who don’t teach, and many more that
have not made training videos, so after they have gone, what we have to
show the future generations?

Without the old 78’s what would we know of the early tango orchestras?

Rick and Alejandra are held in the highest regard by all of the
milongueros I have met, so to say unkind and untrue things about them is
unforgivable

Dear Robert and Rick,

This is settled then...

However, I'd like to add that this whole ordeal around photos and videos
seems quite artificial for me. In Hungary (and according to my observation
in many other European countries) taking photos or videotaping at a milonga
is seen as an absolutely normal activity. It only shows that you are
(probably) a tourist. I have never been asked whether it is a problem if
someone is taking photos of (or taping) me, but I don't feel that offensive
at all. Actually, when I told this yesterday to some friends at a milonga
they were quite suprised. They immediately guessed that "sure they are
Americans (meaning: USA)" (referring to the US sensitivity to personal
privacy), when I told them that the whole thing was triggered by an
Argentine, they were shocked.

True enough: If you really believe that from a video made at a milonga you
can learn new secrets to dancing tango then you probably never tried it. The
amount of information you can extract is limited to almost obvious things
and maybe some steps (but even that requires some skills).

Cheers,
Aron

One of the list members just informed me of my mistake.

Yes she did. It was me who - for some inexplicable reason - had the
misconception of her being a porteno. Actually, it is very trivial in
hindsight and I knew some time before that she is American, but later on
I've somehow "Argenticized" her in my mind. Maybe because she is always
reporting from BsAs.

However, this debate is maybe only her misconception about porteno
milongueros.

Cheers,
Aron
