Hello List:
I like Karen's idea of having a Tango-L reunion. Well I guess it wouldn't be a true reunion in that most of us have never met in the first place. So which city should host it? Who is volunteering?
I also belong to a list for absinthe drinkers. We had a reunion and it was great fun meeting people known only by word, name or legend. We drank buckets of absinthe late into the next day. I dont suspect the Tango-L party would be quite as peacefull, whiich is a good reson to do it.

This sounds like way fun. Perhaps lots of dancing, romancing, schmoozing, more dancing, hair-splitting, argument honing, debating skills, minutiae info, tip trading, more dancing, musical debates, friend making. Hopefully lots & lots of dancing. My 30th grade school reunion is this Sat & those type of things are getting surreal & twilight zonish.

Hola, Yes!! I very much like the idea of a Tango-L Reunion. It could be done annually. As far as a location is concerned, how about Mt. Vernon Missouri (where Karen Whitesell lives) or in Springfield, Missouri. (about 35 miles east of where Karen lives) or in Branson, Missouri (a beautiful resort area about 40 miles south of Springfield)? This could be a way of bringing tango to southern Missouri and helping Karen's struggling tango community. Karen could spearhead this project if she has a mind to do so. When to hold the reunion? Why during the most beautiful time of the year, in the fall. Let's say in October when the leaves are in full color and the weather is cool. Hot tango in cool weather!!!!! Imagine!! Karen. What do you think? Warm RegardsTango Guy

Sure!!! You're all invited to the first annual Tango-L Reunion right here in
Mt Vernon, Missouri. October is great. Second weekend is the annual Apple
Butter Making Days craft festival. Do we want to compete with thousands of
people on the square with 200 food and craft booths, or do we want the
weekend all to ourselves when the square is empty?
I will have another dance floor downstairs in my shop space ready by then,
the bricks are about done on the new store front as we speak.
You know this is my dream, I just didn't think I had enough of a core group
to help me. But I'm game if you are. I welcome your thoughts. Karen

Dear Karen, I like your idea. The Tango-L Reunion could be the weekend following but promoted during the Apple Butter Festival. Part of the promotion could be a small booth and tango demo just to get every one excited. Piggy-back festivals have worked elsewhere. One could invite the general public by putting up posters and having tango demos all over Mt. Vernon, Springfield, Joplin, Branson and other nearby communities. We can invite anyone from anywhere to come even those living in foreign countries. One can tell them about the beauty of the area and how great the people are. But what to name the Reunion? It could be called the October Tango Fest and Tango-L Reunion. Yes Karen. We all love you and your dedication to tango. This could be your dream come true. What would be some of your ideas to get this thing going? What events could we have? Or do we just dance? We could have 'Hit and Run Tango Demos' in and around Mt. Vernon. What great promotional possibilities that would have. This e-mail is not just to
Karen but to all you Tango Nuts everywhere. Let's here your ideas and what you are willing to do to help. Tango Guy

In traveling I have met a number of people who belong or have belonged to
the Tango-L discussion group.
Typically, I have run into the most Tango-L participants on one trip at
big tango events such as the Miami Tango Festival, the Denver milonguero
weekends, or the now defunct Stanford tango weeks.
In 1995 at the Stanford Tango Week, there was a meeting of Tango-L
participants. I think about ten people attended the meeting, which was a
large number given the about 300 Tango-L participants at the time. Seems
like the natural thing would be to hold a Tango-L "reunion" at one of the
big tango events. The organizers might be willing to provide a little bit
of space for such a meeting, knowing that they might get a boost in
attendance.

Stephen has a great idea here, get-togethers at Festivals. I'd be happy to arrange logistics for such a thing @ the 2 Festivals that Clay Nelson puts on here in Portland. Heck, I'll even provide small dolls of myself so that Golden Age music-lovers/people, whom I've irritated & agitated over the years, can stick long sharp pointy pins into ;o) Course I'm also coming into some $$$ soon, so can fly. SF & Seattle are in managable driving distance from PDX.

At the risk of sounding a little negative, I will say that having a
"Tango-L" reunion within another tango event might actually cause some folks
who do not know or participate in the list feel excluded. That seems to be
exactly what folks are trying to avoid. I'm sure there is a way to do it
that will work best for everyone, but surely this must be done with some
care.
Happy reunions to all,
Manuel

I accepted the challenge prematurely. Forgot about the Portland Tangofest
in Oct. We will be hard pressed to find a date not interfering with
something somewhere. I'll still offer my place someday.
Thanks to Tango Guy for wanting to help support my venue, but I wouldn't
want our reunion to be a public show. It would be a private party, just
dancing, for I can't afford a festival with professional teachers anyway.
We would learn by watching, dance by doing, the best teacher.
I would hire Tango Lorca from Kansas City for live music one night, we have
to splurge on that. Otherwise, an affordable weekend in a classy place in a
quaint little town in the middle of everywhere.

Guess I might as well make it official.
Since quite a few Tango-L subscribers from Pittsburgh/Cleveland are
coming to next Saturday's (June 7) workshop with Susana Miller, we're
inviting Tango-L people to join us for dinner after the workshop. We
expect to walk up the street to a local restaurant. At least that's
the plan - if it rains on Friday (which means the Friday outdoor
concert gets moved to Saturday), then it's a Sunday breakfast
instead. Contact me for more details.
Joining Sean & I will be Karen Whitesell of Missouri, Robert Hauk of
Portland, and Timmy Tango & Joanne of Cleveland. More are coming but
I'll let them announce themselves if they choose.

An idea - with digital technology these days, how difficult would it
be to do a "yearbook" type thing with pictures of participants for a
festival? Or perhaps people could use paste their picture on the
collaborative website before going to a festival if they want to meet
people? We are an easy couple to spot (the Filipino chica and the
bearded Irishman), but it took awhile to hook up with folks in Denver
who wanted to meet us last weekend.
