Subject: Ricardo Suarez, milonguero -- feliz cumpleanos!
I met Ricardo Suarez six years ago when all the milongueros went to Club
Juvenil on Saturday night. Ricardo and his partner Greta had their reserved
table next to where I sat with my milonguero boyfriend, so I was introduced
and got to know them. I didn't realize at the time that I was seeing the
best dancing in Buenos Aires every Saturday night. I asked Ricardo if he
would talk about his life in tango and allow me to film him dancing in the
milonga. I recorded Ricardo talking for two hours about his life in tango,
none of which I understood at the time.
Today is Ricardo's 82nd birthday. I called to wish him a happy birthday.
He told me that he is in good health, still works in his electrical repair
shop in San Telmo and enjoys dancing on the weekends. Tango keeps him young
and fit, and he says dancing is the best therapy. He doesn't smoke and has
never been married. His favorite orchestra is Troilo, and when a tanda of
milonga begins, he is on the floor as quickly as anyone dancing milonga con
traspie with women half his age.
