Let's see... I believe Billy Joel's "Piano Man" is a waltz, "Morning
is Broken" by Cat Stevens (really old song/lyrics, from a church hymn I
think, 1700s), that Titanic song by Celine Dion "Heart will go On",
"Annie's Song' by John Denver, "Carribean Blue" by Enya. All Vienesse
Waltzes should work splendidly for Tango. That song "Amore/Pizza Pie"
by Dean Martin is a waltz?

I'd like to add Tandas of: Color Tango, Los Reyes, high-fi Sassone,
Troilo, DeAngelis, DiSarli, Alberto DiPaulo, Canaro Waltzes, Pugliese to
the "How to Sequence Tandas" thread. Its very refreshing to dance to
post-Golden age music, this is such beautiful music when the sound quality
is really high & in stereo.
The 3 Alternative Milongas were very well attended at Tangofest. Heard
Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" on Saturday, great song for Tango.

Hail Rick & well met!
It was really nice putting the faces & postings together ;-). I too was
pleased to meet Rick as well as Peter. Great guys and lots of fun. This is
one of the great things about attending these events. Not only we get a
chance to some great dancing but get to meet all kinds of nice folks! I
cannot personally greet all the people I met & chatted with in this post but
I definitely remember and value all our meetings and conversations. :-)
I'm not opposed to the concept of alternative milongas (might as well be
opposed to the concept of dawn following the night). Anyway, I also agree
that the sound quality of newer recordings is really nice. Still, to my ears
and my feelings, there is no way to beat the Golden Era tangos for dancing
the traditional way. BTW, the late night milonga Sat night had some
fantastic quality sound and wonderful classic tango music. I spoke to the DJ
and asked him about his equipment and format becuase I was really impressed
by the quality of his D'Agostino & Vargas recordings. I think he attributed
the great sound to his choice of file compression. He did not use MP3
compression but WMA (?). Anyway, great stuff. I'm going to adopt the same
format to my DJ'ing methods.
Greetings to all the nice ppl who came to the Portland TangoFest. Great job
Clay!!

Many techno geeks do agree that the best lossy format is OGG vorbis,
a free and open format; however, it is not widely adopted. IMO, once
we use a high enough bit-rate and a good compressor -- LAME for MP3,
vorbis-tools for OGG, and Quicktime/FAAC for AAC for example, at 192 VBR
& up -- any difference in quality only exists to a trained pair of ears.

Hmmm... maybe the quality of my MP3's suffers from the lower quality of the
compressor I use? I'm using the Musicmatch program to rip the CDs into MP3
files. I have noticed that the sound is very bad at anything below 120 bit
compression. However, I have not noticed the higher bit rates to produce
discernibly higher quality. I even purchased an extrenal sound card for my
lapton but still the sound quality I get from my MP3's is not quite as good
as wath I heard Saturday night. I don't think he was even using a sound card
other than whatever his laptop had internally. Any sugesstions to improve
quality?

Dear Trini,
You asked about waltzes. Here are some that are fun to dance to and that I've
used when I DJ dances. Some are by famous performers, some are more obscure.
There are lots of musical genres represented: easy-listening, rock, pop, movie
music, new age, country, cajun/zydecko, Latin, gypsy, motown, blues, Irish,
classical, standards, folk, bluegrass - take your pick; there are so many
wonderful flavors of life to dance to.

First of all, you have to compare the output soundquality of your laptop
playing the CD with playing the ripped mp3 files.
If there is no difference between CD and mp3 and the quality is bad anyway,
you have a problem with your hardware. (e.g.soundchip or external soundcard)
If the CD output is OK and the mp3 output is bad, your ripping
method is the problem. Musicmatch sucks !
You need a program with the newest lame codec implemented,
it's the lame 3.96 encoder, e.g. MediaMonkey Version 2.2.2
https://www.mediamonkey.com
If you choose the following setting, even experts won't be able
to tell a CD from mp3:
-alt preset extreme-
VBR Quality 0
Samplerate 44100
The compression rate will be at about 1:5 / 1:8,
it depends on the source material. Sure, it saves disc space,
if you encode your CDs with 128 CBR (1:10) or lower, but
the quality could be pretty poor :-((
Don't try to save disc space, it doesn't pay !!

have your compared speakers? changed the settings? (pop/classic/spoken
etc?) ran it through some filters? you can beef it up considerably, get
volume into flat recordings and make the old ones sound like the new
ones. I am also using a program called 'volume logic' which equalizes
the different recordings - the volume of tracks though recorded
differently is adjusted. You can spend considerable time on this and
can get lost in the possiblilities ;-) Look around, there's plenty of
software that will do the job.

Thanks to Michael for that long fascinating list of "alternative tango"
waltzes (split up into tempo, as well! Fantastico...)
A couple more:
"Run for the Roses" - Dan Fogelberg's popular "Kentucky Derby" theme song -
"Norwegian Wood" - a fast Beatles waltz, with a tempo that will feel
familiar to tango dancers

Great suggestion for the method Peter,
For my own usage, I have been using AAC with iTunes in the past. It it
is a good choice, I think, given the gears: powerbook & iPod and that
QuickTime MP3 encoder isn't quite as good as LAME one. I had once, last
year, heard and seen Sharna DJing with her powerbook at a milonga in
Providence. The sound quality was good, to my ear; still remembered
that the last song before leaving the milonga was Fresedo's classic,
Tigre viejo (or was it Derecho viejo?). There is an iTunes-LAME, a free
plugin that integrates well with its host, for OS X, but I haven't got
around to compare between LAME/MP3 and QuickTime/AAC yet. To my ears,
there is no significant difference betweeen 256 kps AAC format encoded
iTunes/Quicktime and raw uncompressed audio -- based on mid-range
Sennheiser 515 and 212 headphones. Moreover, check your source. Is your
souce material good enough before the compression? Keith has a number of
good examples at totango.net.
Cheers,
Chanop

Thanks all for the waltz suggestions. It will be
interesting to see how the students in my vals class
handle these tunes tonight.
In mentally playing some of these tunes in my head,
I've come to a couple of conclusions:
1 - I need to listen to the radio more,
2 - Although I've used non-tango music to teach about
moving to the tango beat, the same probably won't be
as successful for vals (except for the Viennese waltz,
and such).
Currently, I feel propelled to do 1-2-3 in the
non-tango valses because it takes a little more effort
to hear the rhythm. But it's something to play with.
In the next couple of weeks, I'll compile the list and
add it to the Georgia Tech community webpages.
Happy Valsing,
Trini de Pittsburgh
