Subject: Roxanne Trivia

February 23, 2004 at Mocha Jo in Montreal.

End of the night, I ask for requests. One of my favorite partners calls from
the floor, "El Tango De Roxanne." I play it. Someone else comes up to ask me
what it is because they like it so much. Still happens every time. The
juxtaposition of Roxanne by the Police and Tanguera by Mores in the film
soundtrack of Moulin Rouge was a stroke of genius.
--------------------

Spring, 1978.

Keith is a dj on a radio station in Toronto that allows him freedom to play
what he wants.

His friend gives him a single by an unknown British group that is going to
play at his club tonight. One side is a song called "Peanuts." On the other
is a song called "Roxanne." No album out yet.

I play the songs and tell people to join me tonight on Queen Street to see
the new band.

My show ends at 1 AM. I go the the club. There are 7 people (including me)
in the audience when I get there. The band plays 5 encores for us.

The Police. Roxanne. Etc. (I spent some time with Sting and the boys back
then -10 years before I discovered tango).

But I have a special smile when I hear El Tango de Roxanne.

For many reasons.

Reggae has the emphasis on 1 and 3.

Tango has the emphasis on 1 and 3.

Don't get me started ...
