Wednesday
It is a small world. While we were walking on the beach in Barceloneta in the afternoon, we cross paths with the German girls and greeted each other. My wife jokingly insinuated that I have been secretly making plans with them, especially when I said I would go out dancing that night. (Milonga el Yeite on Calle Valencia).
It was quiet when I arrived at the milonga. Turns out there was a football game involving Bacelona, and people were waiting until the game had ended before going out. What kind of tangueros are these that put football ahead of tango?
At one table, I noticed someone that knew the organizers, but was sitting by herself. She was yet another non-Spaniard. This time, it was a student from Greece who was studying at one of the universities in the city. We had a few dances, but she had to leave early to catch the last subway home. That was too bad, because we were having a good time.
The girls from Munich did show up, this time accompanied by a local tanguero. We greeted each other, and I had a few dances with them.
Thursday
It is a small world indeed. While walking in the old city, we ran into the origanizer of the Friday night milonga. He recognized me too and we greeted each other and chatted briefly.
This is one of the many benefits of tango. It is a great way to meet and become one of the locals in a new city. We were visitors in a strange land, and yet within a few days, we were bumping into friends on the street.
The milonga at Casa Valencia is organized by the same people that run the milonga at Club 7&9 on Sunday. My sister-in-law came with us tonight. Pilar was there and I introduced her to my wife. I also pointed out a few others that I had met or danced with on Sunday. The milonga was suspended for a short time for various announcements, including that of a festival to be held at the end of the month. They also gave the mike to the origanizer of the Friday night milonga, but this time, they warned him to keep it short. He did.
We had a good evening of dancing, and met many of the local dancers. Oh yes, the girls from Munich were there too.
Aside from the bad luck on the first two days, there is lots of good dancing in Barcelona. Just make sure to verify the information you find on the internet.
Apart from the dancing, Barcelona reminded me of Buenos Aires, with its one-way streets and 6-10 storey buildings. For whatever reason, on more than one occasion when I wanted to say Barcelona, Buenos Aires is what I actually said. Can you spell b OBSSESSIONb ?
Next b we headed south towards Valencia in our rental car. In two weeks, we will end up in Madrid. In the mean time, though, we have no plan what so ever, other than the a list of places that we do want to visit b Granada, Sevilla, Ronda.
Search from anywhere on the Web and block those annoying pop-ups.
