Subject: Tango "Brazo de Oro"
Can anyone tell me whether Jose Basso "borrowed" the
melody for this tango from the Italian composer
Leoncavallo (yes, the one of "Pagliacci" fame), or
whether it is an original composition? There are no
lyrics for this one, as far as I know, but the
bandoneon in it is to die for. And no, it's not the
theme song for the movie, "The Man With the Golden
Arm." :)
Some of my friends believe that "Brazo de Oro" is
really Leoncavallo's tune called "La Mattinata",
interpreted by many different singers, and in many
different languages, over the years. There was an
American version in the 50's or 60's by Vic Damone,
which was wildly popular, apparently, entitled,
"You're Breaking My Heart 'Cause You're Leaving". Same
tune, though. And, I believe, credit was duly given to
Leoncavallo.
Just as an afterthought, does anyone know whether or
not there are lyrics for the tango "Marianito"? I
couldn't find any on the "definitive" list.
I'm also curious as to why no lyrics were written for
certain tangos, but that's a topic for another
thread.... :)
