I was asked by someone who just started tango what tango songs
he should be listening to. But I don't have a good recommendation;
I myself bought tango CDs pretty randomly and my collection still
lacks many of the popular songs I hear at milongas.
Can anyone recommend a few compilation CDs, iTunes song
collections, or any other source that beginners should purchase
first?

I really like the compilations from dym like:

I think at least some of these would be on iTunes. I bought a few of the dym compilations through Amazon a couple of years ago when I didn't own much tango music and they were a great way to build up a reasonable set of danceable songs pretty quickly. There were lots of other compilations I bought in those early days that I never listen to any more but not these ones. They are still on high rotation!
