Reading Enrique Santos Discepolo's verses one can see that he was indeed
very depressed.
Here an example from Yira Yira.

" Aunque te quiebre la vida,
aunque te muerda un dolor,
no esperes nunca una ayuda,
ni una mano ni un favor."

Even when life breaks you,
even when you are bitten by pain,
don't you ever expect help,
or a hand or a favor."
Salut!

Duh, duh. What Discepolo wrote said a lot about the developments in
Argentine society. I think he has a position in Argentina like certain
important philosophers and authors have in Europe.
As a matter of fact, he is my favorite tango author, other than Horacio
Ferrer.
Sometimes reading those endless variations on how bad women are who sell
themselves and pretend to love and how heartbroken the men are who fell for
them (talk about blaming the victim), make me feel glad I don't understand
all of the Spanish I am constantly listening to.
Discepolo, on the other hand, is interesting.
And as you all know, the Germans love gloomy stuff with a certain depth to
it. ; )

Homero Manzi express in his poem Discepolin, what was Enrique Santos feeling

"Te duele como propia la cicatriz ajena"

" The scar from others hurts you as if it was yours"

Alberto mentioned

"Homero Manzi express in his poem Discepolin, what was Enrique Santos
feeling

"Te duele como propia la cicatriz ajena"

" The scar from others hurts you as if it was yours"

After he killed himself by starvation somebody (possibly his wife Tania)
said:

" After so many years of assuming the scars of others, he lacked strength to
suffer his own.

He was attacked, ridiculed and vilified due to his political ideas.
He became very pessimistic, suddenly stopped his successful theatrical
season "Blum", then withdrew from the tango scene, became a recluse in his
house and remained silent. After a while he stopped eating, refused to see
any doctors... at the end his weight was only 37 Kg. (81 lbs.).
He died on December 23rd. 1951.

Suicide is mentioned in many of Discepolo's lyrics.

!Mire, si no es pa' suicidarse, que por ese
cachivache sea lo que soy!

Tell me, shouldn't I kill myself
thinking that for this old junk
I was left as what I'm now!

He refers to an old love,( he runs into her by chance as she was leaving a
cabaret ugly and old ) ... he remembers when she was so beautiful that made
him crazy and drove him to betrayal of friends and principles so much as to
sink his mother in poverty and losing all, even his human dignity just to
give her luxury and pleasure. He ask himself how this "old wreck" could
have led him to ruin his life so completely.
The name of this tango is "Esta noche me emborracho" (I will go drunk
tonight).

Shall I say cheers! :)
