Subject: the tango elephant
dear friends from tango list
once again the discussion over authentic styles , reminds me of the old story of the four blind people that met an elephant at a street and try to describe to the other what was alike .
One said " the elephant is strong ivory piece" , other " no, is like a giant leaf ", other " no, is a huge column " , other " no is like a serpent that sniffs".
It is useless to discuss which is the authentic tango style, or if the tango style that is taught abroad is authentic . As far as it is danced and acepted by your local tango community , is authentic, I think.
Is interesting the comparison made with the malbec wine and budweiser, because the malbec wine has been successfully exported as "argentine wine" due to the malbec grape flavour, what is called "varietal", not blended with other grapes. Here at the milongas , people drink.... whatever .... beer, wine, soft drinks, soda water, tea , coffee , whisky . What they can afford to pay , finally.
So maybe is not what tango style are you being taught, but what tango can you afford yourself to dance beyond labels and boundaries, with the proper partner , in a gentle dancing place,. with a wise DJ that produces the music you need to spent the night socializing and having a good time.
Now I remember a mnemomic that Carlos Gavito told us rooky students once " I will make upwards the steps for the embrace each time / Dare para arrina los pasos para el abrazo cada vez "
warm regards
alberto
