I saw the posting suggesting that spyware could have come from Tango A or L.

That is highly unlikely, usually it comes from a site whose interest is to make money, rarely a list server.

Likely spyware sources:
Porn sites
Anything free:
Free smiley.
Free screen savers.
Free weather watchers.
Free n when you follow an ad game to win but must fill out information and accept any kind of agreement.

adware ( yahoo members ) again a free service to track your web habits, they feed you information, for free and follow which links you use and what you look at on the web ...
