Subject: on tango language
I was listening to Ravi Shankar this morning and I though how great it would be to dance tango to it. I am usually a purest in these matters, but who wants to kill inspiration?
Tango is a silent language for the body. And so long as you are speaking with proper tango vocabulary and your partner understands you, then you are still dancing tango, no matter what the sound track is. After that, it is just a matter of tradition and preference.
A friend once said to me that she feels very strongly that tango must be danced to real tango music because it has a particular vibration of Buenos Aires. This is an interesting point of view, and to me neither right nor wrong.
On the flip side, one of my favorite dancing memories is of dancing to Pink Floyd (Robin was the DJ) and just loving it. It was an all out tango zone moment. And I dont even like rock and roll music. So there again, inspiration was at work.
