Subject: "Tango loco"
Good evening
When I look at the list of tracks collated
by Mrs Fabiano I could not help but
think of the music that filled the house
of several "Tango Loco" ( Tango gone crazy )
that were held at various time at our own "Tango Libre"
( "Tango with no boundaries" )
location in Montreal, since the first
"Tango Loco" instalment in 1998.
The first concept came from the
creative mind of Pierre Lang who
in 1998 also produced the movie
"Viva el Tango".
At the time, Pierre Lang was also a student
of "Tango Libre". He went to see the manager,
Gerardo Sanchez, and told him about his concept
to DJ the music for one evening where
people could dance the tango to music
that know no boundaries.
In A.T., the basic understanding of lead and follow,
the torsos`s position one facing the other,
and the variety of steps and combination
allows a couple to basically be able to dance
on anything they feel like interpretating.
The idea of dancing the technique of tango
to other style of music is not new; you know
a well known american tango teacher who
also teached A.T. to the sound of american music;
He (D.T.) also choreagraphed around the
same idea.
What Pierre Lang did is to extend this idea
to a whole evening of dancing. The idea came
to be very popular, full house.
During these evenings, starting in 1998, you
could hear
Querer from the Cirque du soleil ( 1994 )
and Tango to Evora from Loreena Mc Kennitt
These two are on Mrs Fabiano`s list of new music
for the miloga
along with Tom Waits ( also on the list with his
They tango till they`re sore ).
a lot of Evan Lurie with at the least two albums
( which are not on the list ).
a lot of Jacques Brel ( Pierre Lang`s favorite composer )
who commited a few tangos in the 1960s.
some Paolo Conte ( Blues Tango ) who also compose in the
tango register and sounds better to my ears than
Juan Carlos Caceres who also get some air play
in "tango Locos".
Another style of music very much in vogue
was Algerian music; enough that big cushions
in the sytle of Egyptian salons would also be
dispersed on the side of the dance floor, for
atmosphere.
Now in 2003, the concept of "tango locos" as
evolved further and was extended by other
people to the radio station
CINQ-FM with one hour program;
This radio program is hosted by what looks like
communication specialists with almost no
tango background except they were able to surround themselves
with tango aficionados from the "Tango libre".
Tango is a very loose concept in their hands,
mixed in any sauce you could imagine.
Tango music is not heard very much but they
talk a lot about it. This concept is probably
a good thing if you want to reach out to
other sensibilities as much as possible.
Their theme song is MONSERRAT by the
Orquesta del Plata; ( On Mrs Fabiano`s list
under Bajofondo )
"Tango Loco" could be heard every Tuesday
at 13:00 hrs, on CINQ FM, Radio Centre-Ville
