Andrew asks how frequently milonga/candombe is played here.
I never hear that expression. All that is played here are tangos, milongas,
valses, cortinas and other type of music between the tango tandas such as
merengue, mambo, salsa, some jazz (from the old times) to swing. We never
dance the choreography of one dance to another type of music. I think that
the strength of the original dance is diluted if one does that, but that is
my humble opinion. Every one should dance as he likes.
So when they play mambo we dance mambo, when the play salsa we dance salsa.
I think that we dance swing in a different way that the tourist from North
America do. I took the pain to learn from a girl from the USA but I decided
that the local form is more interesting and expressive.
So much for personal taste!
Candombe is one of the tango roots, nobody dances it any more except perhaps
in Uruguay.
As far as I know.

I think there might be some confusion .. I didn't mean old uruguayan
drumming candombe, which I have a number of recordings of and sounds more
like african drumming, but the milonga style that I've often heard called
milonga-candombe, or candombe milonga, or whatever .. that traditional dance
orchestras played, like Rodolfo Biagi's Flor de Montserrat, or the Firpo
piece I mentioned, etc .. it has a rhythmic sound very similar to milonga
... anyhow! Swing (per your comment) is actually sort of interesting in the
US, just for your trivia .. there are many dance variations called swing
here people dance - 6 & 8 count llindy, east coast, west coast, balboa,
shag, etc etc .. as I'm sure is the case with most dances and their
variations.
