I thought the dancing in "The Tango Lesson" was really good. I didn't really
enjoy the rest of the movie that much or the art movie within the movie.

"The Coca-Cola name in China was first read as "Ke-kou-ke-la", meaning "Bite
the wax tadpole" or "female horse stuffed with wax," depending on the
dialect. Coke then researched 40,000 characters to find a phonetic
equivalent, "ko-kou-ko-le," xlating into "happiness in the mouth".

"Parkers ad, "It won't leak in your pocket & embarass you", was xlated into
Spanish as "It won't leak in your pocket & make you pregnant".

"Kuutamolla" directed by Ahu Louhimies in 2002 has a tango sub-plot. Minna
Haapkyld stars as Iiris, a thirtysomething singleton. Her apparently
happily-married friend Laura (Laura Malmivaara) still carries a torch for
the tango dancer she met in Buenos Aires. We are treated to a few very brief
flashbacks. No 16 of the deleted scenes "Rome and Buenos Aires" is longer,
better, and has more tango content than the sequence that actually appears
in the film.

Louhimies' earlier film "Levottomat" (2000) has a single extremely brief
scene towards the end where a tango is played at a wedding party. This is
rudely
interrupted when it is revealed that the best man (Mikko Nousiainen) has
been bonking not only the bride but also the preacher. Laura Malmivaara
stars again, as the best man's long suffering girlfriend.

Both films available on DVD with English subtitles.

---OK, people,

I know, I know, I owe you.... I was supposed to
compile a list of all the movies EVER MADE about tango
and publish it on the list! And I will.... I promise.

The good news is that I was so overwhelmed by the
wealth of information I received on this topic, I
was...well... completely overwhelmed!! But I'm
working on it!!! You have one humdinger of a list to
look forward to! :)

The bad news is that I don't know how to transmit it
to you in an appropriate fashion. (Technologcially
challenged, you know :)) Also, some people probably
couldn't care less. The List does not handle
attachments, as I understand it, and this would be one
heck of a long message. Which I'm totally opposed to
anyway, in principle, as you know! ;) So, you rocket
scientists out there, let me hear from you. Privately,
of course. :)

Luda,

I think the best way to make the info available is to put it on a website.
There are many people on the list who have websites and if I remember
correctly, there is one created by Tango-L people so that we can all upload
stuff...that's why I'm copying the list in this message, so that someone
will remind us of the details.

Thanks for doing this,

Barbara

Using a collaborative website is a great idea. In fact, there is a
collaborative public website for tango at
https://coweb.cc.gatech.edu/tango/uploads/

I started a movie section
<https://coweb.cc.gatech.edu/tango/33>

Everyone can make contributions.

With best regards,
Steve

Subject: Tango movies list...almost done!

Hi folks,

There was a discussion on the Tango-L not too long ago
about the movie "Naked tango", and some other movie. I
can'f find it. If someone wants to send me a copy of
those posts, I'll be happy to include them on my list.
Just for the sake of "completeness". If such a thing
is possible. Just when I think I've seen it all,
another wonderful post arrives! With more great
informaton!

The rocket scientists on the List have come through
with flying colors trying to help me!! As usual. Thank
you one and all! Of course. A website is the way to
go!! :))

I have compiled a rather informal list, giving all the
informaton I thought was pertinent, as I received it,
with not much editing, including some great
suggestions people sent about where to get MORE
information (websites, archives, universities,
government sources, etc.)!! :)

I have also included some editorial comments (by
contributors, as well as myself) which I thought would
be of interest to the List. It's going to be a rather
primitive document. Basic Word format right now. The
only thing I've been REALLY fanatical about is
protecting people's privacy, meticulously trying to
eliminate any references that could be traced. Not
that anybody had anything REALLY scandalous to say.
Darn it!! :))

HI Luda et al,
Came across a really funny tango scene (European/American tango, but I
gather you are not making distinctions or your list would be much shorter)
in a 1943 movie rented from the library -- Above Suspicion with Joan
Crawford and Fred MacMurray. The scene is toward the end, and takes place at
a party or nightclub (can't remember) in wartime Germany.
Best wishes,
Barbara

I just saw "The man without a past". Not a lush picture. Acting and
cinematography are quite wooden, probably intentionally the style fits the
story and so it does not distract. If you like Stranger than paradise by
Jarmush you might enjoy this one too.

Anyway, someone wrote not long ago that Lost in translation is a tango
movie. "The man without a past" is another tango movie: sparse acting with
throbbing undercurrents. Moreover there are excerpts from several original
tangos by Antero Jakoila in the soundtrack. Quite beautiful and danceable
too.

Cheers, Oleh Kovalchuke

My favorite film is "Tango Bar" with Raul Julia. It's only available on VHS (at
least in the US). The music and dancing are great and I never tire of
watching it.
