Subject: [Tango-L] Taxi Dancers Unbound
To: tango-l@mit.edu
Dear friends from tango list
The taxi dancers activity in Buenos Aires , have changed from their initial activity of an escorting fee from outside the milonga dancing place to the inside of the dancing place .
The main question is , who is the one thay changes the dancing codes , the one that receives a payment or the one that pays for a service of taxi dancer.?
Some comments of hidden taxi dancers made in the list are not quite fair for people that are asked to dance a courtesy dance with a visiting dancer . It is part of the activity of the organizer and host , if a person asks her/him if it is possible to have a dance, the organizer will try to help .
It is true that there are people at a dancing place that are invited by the organizer on a free entrance basis, but this is part of the "atmosphere" that a place has.
Good dancers from the 40`s and 50`s , are now .... around 70 to 80 years old people, living on a pension fund very small . They like to dance and can t afford the cost of a milonga ticket two or three times a week, as it is his amusement to do this routine. Therefore is understandable that they are invited . Also some old time teachers. However I have seen tango teachers going to a milonga , and paying the ticket at the entrance as anyone .
This comments are related to Buenos Aires milongas . I dont know how it is handle the matter .
Now, what would a woman do if someone ask her to dance to know if it is a taxi dancer the proposer ...... is part of human behaviour and improvement of a mutual understanding , that if a person approach your table and / or nods /cabecea for a dancing , it is a free ride ....... otherwise you should be asking at every time " is this free ?? " and will be very unconfortable.
Also, it would be unaceptable to to tip an unknown free basis dancer that take you to a tanda saying " it was wonderful , thank you , take this money and keep the change " .......
Also it would be unaceptable to have a shrinker nearby the entrance to solve every crisis that people have , for instance " a man came to my table and asked me to dance, I am not sure of their intentions, what do you do advise me to do ??"
One exciting aspect of a milonga dancing place is the random fact, to meet someone that you have never ever met before , and have a great dance, or contrarywise, to meet a dumb leadfeet that makes the tanda a nightamare. But this is the way it is, if anything is known beforehand, if every action inside the dancing place is rated and measured and billed and collected, where is the fun of dancing ??
warm regards

Dear Tangueros,
Can I ask you for your views on the presence of taxi dancers at festivals
(in the US, and everywhere else)?
I don't seem to resolve my own personal deep conflict with it-- I want to
have the certainty that, when I am being asked to dance, is because the
person wanted to dance with me, rather than give me some sort of 'charity'
dance-- or a 'sales pitch' dance, to ensure that I come back to this or that
festival once more.
Even if I dance less, I ask for quality and connection--and something tells
me that, by nature, a taxi-tanda can never be good enough-- any views?
