My experience is that the ones who listen to the most diverse non-tango music
are often some of the poorer dancers.

There's nothing wrong with close embrace because classic salon tango was
always danced close. It's the new interpretation of it, the so called "milonguero"
style that people only know, which has arisen over the last decade or two.
Tango was almost never danced apart but most people here and in other countries
don't know that and only know the tango from stage shows, which unfortunately
is what is often taught. Don't forget that the same young hotshots from
Argentina that everyone is enchanted by only learned the tango themselves recently,
some of them with even less experience than us. Before that they were too busy
listening to rock and roll and other music. Tango was something their parents
and grandparents did, It was too "old fashioned" for them. Until of course
they realized that it was cool to do it again.

But I'm off to Buenos Aires this week anyway, looking for the older
milongueros.
Cheers
Charles
