Subject: Tyranous Tango Teacher

The worst place to be dancing in a New York milonga is between two teachers. Everyone seems to think the beginners are dangerous--they will kick you, crash into you, or (more comon) stop dead for a minute. It is my experience that the teachers (here in new york where we all have pretty bad manners to begin with) have the worst dance manners.

Many of you (no matter how quiet your dance style) probably know it is alot of fun to have the whole floor to yourself. You may not dance any differently but you feel like the weight is off your shoulders, and the wait is off the floor. So yes, I could always use a little bit more space. If you are from the midwest and dance in a mall this may not be a problem--but here, every single event is pretty packed. It is a combination of expensive real-estate and vast population. We get crammed together on the subway, in the elevator, and even in the kitchen.

So I know why a teacher wants to claim a slightly bigger part of the floor, we all do. I think teachers get used to dancing all day in their home studio where there is alot of space and everybody gets obediently out of their way. This is true for both men and women teachers.

Most teachers go to Milongas with a slightly different agenda than the rest of us. They gotta sell themselves and drum up tango business. You grab a little extra space and you're going to be able to draw the attention of the new comers, and even some of us with a trained eye.

Look, I am glad for people who go into a tango-trance hug and walk to the music. But it just ain't that much fun to watch. You almost feel like you are spying on them if you do. It is no fun to watch a couple dance a poor-style big-steppin flashy tango either--however, it is fun to watch a good teacher dance a perfect style with a little more space. So if I want to show of to my "audiance" (thats us, the people who are on the buy side of the tango business) I grab a bit more than my fair share of the floor, dance a bit larger than I should, and I linger a bit to long in front of prospective clients.

And then there is the guy (from the buy side of the tango) who is just so pleased with himself that his favorite tango teacher/performer is dancing with him. He isn't showing off for us, but he feels like he should show off to her. She knows better than to let him run wild, but heck, he is a paying customer. At least in this case, we don't feel like we are witness to an advertisement, just a bit of private-lesson-fee payback on a public floor. Three or four weeks ago a bunch of us had to listen to a woman teacher lecture us on floor craft when she had kicked at least 4 people the night before.

Frequently some of the best milonga's are held at dance studios. And here the teachers who teach at the studio, or who are involved in setting up the milonga seem to think that on their turf they are entitled to more of the floor than joe shmoe who paid his money at the door.

And then--just to be fair, there are some teachers who behave themselves, but it takes a while to figure out who they are. And also to be fair, I like watching the better teachers dance their large dance, but only when I am not dancing.

So here is my advice--in a new york milonga, stay away from the teachers, you are much better off dancing near a few novice dancers who have no other mission than to enjoy the dance and the music.

Wow! That's terrible. We have a completely different experience in Atlanta.
The best place to dance is between some teachers as they know best how to
navigate. Almost every teacher in Atlanta has better navigational skills
than the average dancer.

Be sure you dance directly behind Burl. Find another teacher
to dance in front of him. Show Burl what a real "mordita"

Love to watch but I'm going to the Washington marathon. Such
a shame that subway closes at midnight Thursday and Sunday
nights. In New York, the subway never closes.

Several years ago there was a brief attempt to start a tango tachers association in New York City. The list had 90 names on it. I am sure it has grown ever since. Some of my students are now teaching.

good or not, there is still value of having a lot of active teachers.
Collectively we bring lots of new faces to the tango scene. The wise dancers ultimately chose the instructors they benefit the most.

You seem to have a reading comprehension problem, Derik... Michael didn't say
"any" he said "many" and that's a major difference.

Dear Richard:

You are absolutely right about my reading
comprehension problem. "any" does not equal "many".,
but in Michael's case the two words are probably
equal. My mistake.

I doubt if Michael knows any Argentine Tango teachers
in New York outside of Ney Melo and Robin Thomas, who
both come down to Houston regularly to visit us, even
though there are quite a few other Argentine tango
teachers in New York, but I could be wrong about that
too.

By the way, in Paris, there are 180 Argentine tango
teachers and most of them are Argentine. I am
surprised that New York only has 90. I thought that
there would be more than that. Interesting.

Dear Richard:

Michael is a very predictable person. Copies everyone
and tries to take credit for their stuff. Not an
original thinker exactly.

The tango teachers in Paris are the ones who need
help. It is a tough market to survive in. You have to
be really great with all the Argentine competition.
Not so in most parts of the USA. Here teachers get
away with a lot, because the dancers are mostly
ignorant about Argentine tango.
