"To him I say: Calm down, my brother.

We are going to a land far across the water
to the north called U-Ru-Guay. She's says I've been
locked up in this apartment way too long. U-Ru-Guay
is a wild mountainous region, and Alejandra, in an
attempt to get me away from the bad air and my
computer addiction, has gotten us jobs as caretakers
at a very large isolated lodge high up in the snowy
mountains. We will be snowed in alone, and I will be
disconnected from the www, ..."

Dear Rick I am calm. I believe everything you say, as I think that you
express with sincerity what is in your heart.
You have a precious companion, so do not let anything come between the two
of you.
A trip to the outdoors is an excellent idea but...

It seems to me that you are talking about the west or the south of Argentina
rather than Uruguay.

Uruguay is a small country situated to the east of Argentina. It has plains,
rolling hills, beautiful beaches, temperate climate and Montevideo, its
pretty and hospitable capital city. A city where tango was born at the same
time as it was developing in Buenos Aires. some sort of smaller Buenos
Aires.

As you can see it has many things but *Mountains with snow. The climate
there is very temperate, it almost never reaches freezing temperatures.

You go there by 'Aliscafo' (Buquebus company) it is a boat on skis that
flies over the water.
You will cross the widest river in the world : The Rio de la Plata. (about
140 km. = 84 miles wide). It has brown water because it carries an enormous
amount of material that it dumps before ending in the Atlantic Ocean
creating a big delta.

You will probably cross to Montevideo where you can dance tango. Do you
think that Alejandra will be popular there as well? if so, do not worry
Uruguayans Milongueros are very polite and respectful of milonga codes. Some
of them, and ladies as well cross the river to come to B.A. shopping and to
dance.

The very rich from Buenos Aires have vacation homes in Punta del Este. An
expensive resort north from Montevideo. Some sort of Beverly Hills with huge
mansions that are occupied an average of six weeks per year.

Many famous tango figures were born in Uruguay. Francisco Canaro for
instance and Gerardo Matos Rodriguez the author of the most famous tango 'La
Cumparsita". It is interesting that he was only 17 when he wrote it. A
student of architecture. Sold the famous tango for 20 bucks.

In any case you will have a nice time if Alejandra is taking you there
but...???are you sure she is taking you to Uruguay?
Check the tickets destination, she may be taking you to another place, a
trip to...???who knows what she has in mind? uhm? high mountains, big
precipices, snow avalanches, people may disappear there. :))

Have a good trip and I hope you come back. :)) Keep writing it is
interesting to see my city and my people through your Yankee eyes.

Un abrazo,

Sergio is right: it doesn't sound like the ROU. Sounds
more like Ushuaia than Uruguay.

But in case you really are going to Uruguay:

If you take the aliscafo from BsAs, you'll land in
Colonia, where they'll put you on a bus to Mdeo. The
boat that goes directly between BsAs and Mdeo is a
large catamaran ferry. Just saying "aliscafo" and
"buquebus" is fun. Either way, it's about 3 hours as I
recall (1h on aliscafo + 2h in bus -or- 3h on ferry).
You can also fly from Aeroparque for about the same
price. It's a short hop over the river, though by the
time you get to Aeroparque, get checked in, board, fly
to Mdeo, deplane, and get a cab to take you into Mdeo,
you've saved a little time, but not all that much.

Make sure you eat a "chivito" while you're there. (No,
nothing to do with goats.) And make sure you're hungry
when you order it. Like dulce de leche? Try La
Pataia. Don't miss the Mercado del Puerto. Order a
"medio y medio" while you're there.

Shopping: leather, furs, sweaters, ceramics (the
"Artesania Rinconada" animals are from Uruguay).

Photo ops: the "yoruguas" carrying around their
"termo".

Have fun,
Kate

Just make sure you have cab money to take you to your hotel. Those Medio & Medios go up to your head a lot faster then your detornilladores. If you are up to it after lunch, Palacio Turanco (hope I spelt it right) and the rest of the old city are nice places to while away the early afternoon.

If time is not a problem, take 3 or 4 days off to go to Hotel Horacio Quiroga near Salto in the north. (A 5 hours drive, a little longer on the bus.) The hotel has hot spring fed pools right on the hotel premises. The hot spring water also feed the taps in your room. A couple of days spent soaking in the pools, walking or biking around the hotel, and at this time of year, sample the fresh oranges from the grooves around the area will definitely help restore your body for more tango on either side of the Rio de la Plata.

P.S. No financial advantage for me here, but I really loved it all three times that I went.
