Subject: useless rules about how to dress

Hello List,

In my view, the USA is a pretty casual place, especially when it comes to dress. I am the hostess of a big milonga in NYC. This entails serving food, washing dishes, fixing the toilets when they break, setting up chairs and tables, climbing a ladder to the DJ booth, and cleaning up the considerable mess that 150 people make after 7 hours of dancing. How could I possibly do all of this in an evening gown? I dont dress up and there is not a dress code. Why should I care what anyone else wears?

Men (and women too) who wear suits to work all week need a break on Sat night. Let them wear what they want. If you like to dress up, great, and if not, that is great too. The point it to have fun, not suffer. Dress codes in milongas are just useless rules.

Last year the New York Philharmonic went on tour to Singapour. It was so hot and humid that the orchestra performed without their suit jackets on. If a long time elegant conservative tradition-bound organization like the Philharmonic can do it, so can a bunch of tango dancers.

Regards,
Sarah La Rocca
