I went to Villa Malcolm like twice a week for like three weeks in a row and
had a great time every time I was there. It's a practica. Dancers get to try
out crazy, but amazing depth defying steps.
It's definitely a place to put your creative juices to work. I find
Villa Malcolm to be the better places to go for Nuevo tango. Yeah
this place isn't like the "normal" milongas of salon dancing. There were all
levels of dancers from Chicho and Frederico Naveria to beginners, but I think
it's very
experimental. (everybody has to start somewhere)
Maybe this place isn't Keith's cup of tea.

I wonder if someone could post a video from this practica so the discussion
could be illustrated. After all we are talking about dance here - it's much
better to see it once than to write a thousand emails about the way those
people dance...

I could find only one clip from Villa Malcolm on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wNJ6g1mrq4
Unfortunately it is a clip of class only. Perhaps girlfromnewtown could post
a clip from the practica as well.

I didn't go to this practica when I was in Buenos Aires last month (the
memories from the previous visit were still fresh in my mind, the
recollections were silmilar to those of Keith), but here are some clips from
twelve more traditional milongas I have filmed while in Buenos Aires:

Sergio wrote a while ago that people dance in open frame at Nino Bien later
in the night. He was right...

Oleh,

What priceless documentation of dancing in the milongas of Buenos
Aires!! A great sampling of the music played too.

Regarding Nin~o Bien late - this is a popular tourist milonga. It's
not surprising there was a little open embrace dancing. I've seen some
there and at Ideal as well.

Miles and Jen,

"Maybe this place isn't Keith's cup of tea."

Duh! I thought my posting made that very clear. But actually, I don't really have anything against
Nuevo dancing and I've taken a lot of classes and private lessons from a couple in BsAs who make
it look great, although they always stress that it's not for use in the milongas. I've also seen a
few demonstratuons of Nuevo during traditional milongas and, again, the professionals made it look
great. What I have against Villa Malcolm is that the people couldn't dance Tango and their
dancing, Nuevo or whatever it was, was truly ugly. I'm sure they thought they were great and
really cool, which is why I suggested they video themselves so they could see how bad they
actually look. To me, Tango is a beautiful thing, even a simple Tango danced by beginners can be
beautiful, and to see a dance floor full of people doing horrible, ugly movements to Tango music -
well, it was just unbearable, as I'm sure it would be to any Tango lover.

I have been dancing to 'La Cumparsita' sung by Tito Schipa for years. A few
burning questions to music connoisseurs:

Did Tito Schipa (Italian tenor from the 30s) record more tangos besides 'La
Cumparsita?

Did any other famous opera singers (Caruso for instance) record tangos?

But burning most of all, what is the name of the orquesta backing Tito. Here
is the sample: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5PTNIUud8k
