While rare, there were drummers in Argentine tango
bands. According to
<https://www.mondolatino.it/losvago/artisti/hectormariaartola.htm>,
Hector Maria Artola sometimes used a drummer. In a
posting last month
<https://pythia.uoregon.edu/~llynch/Tango-L/2003/msg05129.html>
mentioned that both Canaro and Fresedo used drummers.
According to
<https://www.todotango.com/english/creadores/edonato.asp>
Edgardo Donato's "Julian" was inspired by his drummer
Julian Gonzalez.

Thanks for the info!

I traced the Donato reference to the Uruguayan Julian Gonzalez with
whom he played, to a trio playing for about a year back in 1922, but not after
that.

The Hector Artola reference is about a time around 1923, also for about a
year, playing in a trio that sometimes became a quartet with the addition of a
drummer..

The post to tango-l by Charles does not give references, and the same
information can be read on various websites (without references). It is said
that Fresedo is a pioneer of the use of drums in tango (but no references to
actual interpretations or their time period).

There is also a reference to an orquestra by Carlos Marcucci assembled in 1925
that includes a drummer; however they played in Paris/Europe.

Also of course, candombe uses small [African] drums - tamboriles.

And then the modern-time references are to Pablo Ziegler Quintet and crediting
him ( as a Piazzolla follower/disciple) with reshaping the tango orquestra by
throwing away the violin [and bandoneon] and introducing drums.

On balance it is probably fair to claim that drums have played no discernible
part in the argentine tango family of dances except in candombe, and save for
references to occassional use of drums (of what kind though?) in 1922-1925
period, before the Golden Era.

Best regards,
Konstantin

A Google search on "francisco canaro bateria" (without
quotes) yield more than 50 hits. I didn't look at
them all. I'll just mention 2.

According to
<https://www.elportaldeltango.com/historias/orqtipicas.htm>,
in 1925 Canaro went to Paris with drummer Romualdo
Lobo.

According to
<https://www.webcom.com/reporter/nota-canaro.html>, in
1926 Canaro went to New York with drummer Romualdo Lo Moro.
