Ibrahim Ozgur is one of the nicest, mellowest voices of Turkish Tango
(it may be unknown to a lot of people on this list but tango was
popular in Turkey 30's to well into the 60's at least in large
metropolitan areas, both danced and sung) I have several "listero"
friends on "tangoturk" who are much more knowledgeable in this area and
they may also comment about I. Ozgur. Please refer to
https://www.tangointurkey.com/HistoryPages/TT_ATHistory.htm for a brief
history of Turkish tango which may help you put Ozgur's music into
perspective. You can also sample his music at
https://www.turkishmusic.com/Scripts/Music/Album.asp?ID=54

I. Ozgur was born in Istanbul at the turn of the 20th century
(1910-1959). He was trained as a clarinet and sax player. He started to
sing in 1932 and started his recording career in the late thirties. I
play his music whenever I have a chance here in the US and his voice
impresses many listeners with non-turkish origins. I heard it played in
milongas in Europe also. His tango "Mavi Kelebek" or "Blue Butterfly" is
among my favorites. His early recordings and orchestra does not have
bandoneons (accordion was substituted in lieu of a bandoneon ) at times
his music/sound is reminiscent (at least to me) of the late 20's and
early 30's orchestras of Canaro, Carabelli, etc. although the Turkish
Tango is a synthesis of its western counterpart and the harmonies and
sounds of the Turkish music.

Best Regards,
Manuk

Hi List
Hallo Christian
Merhaba Manuk ;-)

The CD mentioned by Christian is a fine one. I like it a lot, it is fine for playing in the milonga. Unfortunately I have passed my copy on to ano=
ther Turkish tanguero so have not been hearing it for a while... As Manuk says, it is mellow and fine for dancing, clear compass, yet still carrie=
s the perfume of Turkish music in the orchestration.

Greetings
Petra

There is a site of Turkish Tango
https://www.tangointurkey.com/GalleryPages/Singers.htm
with references about their lifes and some material to listen to.

I receive a CD from Turkish Tango from my friends Paul& Michiko from London some time ago, and was amazed to "discover" all this Tango world in Turkey.
