Subject: Alternative Tandas...?

Over time, I've found several "alternative" tango songs that I both
enjoy listening to and enjoy dancing to. Two favorites are "Querer"
from Cirque du Soleil's "Alegria," and "Nefeli's Tango" from Haris
Alexiou's "Around the World" album.

For my birthday recently, I asked a DJ friend if she could put together
for me a tanda built around each song. And she did. And the tandas she
gave me are very interesting and enjoyable to listen to.

When she gave me the CD with those tandas on them, she emphasized that
these were just her subjective opinions on what other songs would go
well with "Querer" and "Nefeli's Tango" to create tandas. But that got
me wondering how other people would make tandas around these two songs.

So if anyone is so inclined, I'd be very interested in hearing what
songs you would combine with either "Querer" or "Nefeli's Tango" (or
both) to make interesting and enjoyable tandas.

Please feel free to answer privately if you don't feel the listserv is
an appropriate place to continue this discussion.

Thanks,

Hi Rick

I would put together a tanda as follows:

Ta bakiera, by Goran Gregovic
Ghir enta, by Souad Massi (thanks Robin for giving me
the title)
Tango tis Nefelis, by Xaris Alexiou

It works pretty well and it builds up with good
melodies to the most known song, that is Tango tis
Nefelis.

About "Querer", sorry but I try not to use the song.
It is too slow and listening to it hurts my ears,
because the accent is terrible. Spanish is my first
language and I can assure you that the woman singing
is butchering the pronunciation. For me, understanding
the lyrics makes the experience of dancing tango
somehow different and special; in this case, I wish I
didn't.

Please notice that to put together a tanda of
"alternative" music, you had to ask the list, while to
play a tanda of classical tango, you don't need any
help. Why? Because there a wealth of real tango music
and it is really easy to find good songs that go
together. As beautiful as "Tango tis nefelis" is, I
prefer Malena, Felicia, Lilian, Gricel or any other of
"my" women.

I hope I helped

angel
