I wanted to thank Steve for preparing this semi-partisan list, and would
like make a comment about "how to decide which festival is for social
dancing which is not?"
- # of hours of milongas+ practicas
- class topics offered by festival faculty
- community cooperation-support
- level of community builder features
There is no such equation close embrace = social dancing
This mis-presented formula is only for better marketing purposes.
We should be more careful when suggesting partisan or non-partisan ideas.
If you have no idea about the notion and contents of a festival, you can
contact the organizers, and you can clarify.

I second El Turco's remarks here... What IS "social dancing" in N.
America, Steve? Does your asterisk just indicate which ones are the more
popular (i.e., well-attended) festivals? Or the ones with more
milonga-time than class-time? Or the ones at which Robin Thomas is DJing?

Subject: Re: [Tango-L] Another Update on the North American Tango
Festivals
Unfortunately, much of the information that can be used to assess various
characteristics about the announced tango festivals is not uniformly
available. Some organizers provide extensive information about their
events, including past attendance. Other organizers don't provide much
more information than, "I'm having an event, please attend."
Rather than deciding what is a festival and what is not, I erred on the
side of inclusion--accepting organizers' claims about what is a
festival--even though some "festivals" appear to be not much more than a
workshop with some milongas. Maybe they are regional festivals? Perhaps,
I am too gullible. I learned through a private communication that one
"festival" I listed has never taken place, despite a long-standing website
touting the event. Non-existent probably shouldn't be listed as a
festival--even though the so-called organizer has updated his website for
the coming year's event.
In compiling my list, I did not equate close-embrace or milonguero-style
tango with social dancing. Rather, I have used past statements by the
organizers and the mix of milongas versus classes as identifying festivals
that place the emphasis on social dancing rather than instruction. Those
who view such identification as biased are free to ignore my identifying
asterisks. Perhaps others would prefer a list with indentifiers for
festivals intended for young-hearted dancers, festivals with
milonguero-style tango, festivals in which nuevo-style tango is taught
with too-soft an embrace, festivals recommended by the list maker, etc.?
Such people are free to compile their own lists of festivals and send them
to Tango-L.
With best regards,
Steve

Steve, I think the festivals where Robin is DJing should have 3 stars, not 1.
Thank you.

Subject: [Tango-L] *s [was Another Update on the North American Tango
Festivals]
Checking the facts reveals that at least one festival with Robin Thomas
listed as dj doesn't even have a single star. Maybe it's because the
three points awarded for securing his services were cancelled out by the
other djs or teachers at the festival. I leave it as an exercise to the
interested reader to find at least one such festival.
By the way, Interpreting the * as a star is itself partisan, making the
identification strictly postive, rather than descriptive. If one read the
* as an asterisk, it might connote an event to avoid!
In baseball, an asterisk is attached to a record that requires an
explanation. To taunt Barry Bonds in his recent quest pass Babe Ruth for
second place on the all-time list of career home runs, fans in opposing
stadiums held up signs with *s because it had been suggested that his
steroid-aided home-run record ought to have an asterisk.
With best wishes,
Steve

Now you are on to the start of something here Jake!
When Robin DJs, there can be no doubt that it will be
a great party. A great party means a social festival,
no?
But can we extend this criterion? For example, in
addition to being on the ever growing list of N.
America's best DJs, Robin is also on the ever growing
list of N. America's best teachers. (I'm judging
primarily by the quality of his students' dancing.) So
when Robin is teaching at a festival, may we consider
it to be an educational festival, rather than a social
festival?
Now things are going to get a bit sticky. How do we
classify a festival in which Robin both teaches and
DJs?

The bottom line is Steve provided a service in listing
festivals. If you're interested in the location or dates,
you can look at the web page that's listed with the event to
get more information.
Criticisizing him for "mislabelling" events with or without
an asterisk is just plain ridiculous. Steve isn't promoting
any event so there's no financial gain for him to
"mislabel." I guess the expression "no good deed goes
unpunished" is applicable.
It seems some people are just looking for a fight. It
reminds me of dance style discussions, e.g. This is salon;
no, it's milonguero; no, it's open; etc. A flood of words,
not one drop of wisdom.
