Dear List:
This is, strictly speaking, not a tango fact.
There is information from the U.S. Census that, I believe, contradicts the
"few exist" portion of Derik's post.
American Indians By the Numbers
From Census 2000
Source: U.S. Census Bureau
4.3 million
The number of people estimated to be American Indian and Alaska native or
American Indian and Alaska native in combination with one or more other
races, as of July 1, 2002. They made up 1.5% of the total population.

Dear Manuel, How ironic that the people that named the
dance are all gone. In the US 8 to 9 million Indians
are gone from the same period and few exist. The
blacks survived in large numbers. Derik

Dear Steve, You are right, but Indians at 1.5 percent
of the US population, when blacks are at 15 percent or
more is a huge reduction. Are there 40 million blacks
and 4.5 million indians. Would be curios to know what
the US census says. Also would be interesting to know
the black and Indian population of Argentina if you
happen to see a census from there? Thanks. Derik
