Subject: 150 years of dance halls experience!
Tango has been danced in Buenos Aires for over 150 years, they have
developed a system for a reason(s) and from experience.
To quote Gustavo Naveira (although he is not he only one who says it)
when he was recorded by Daniel Trenner in his 1983 masters class.
“good dancers dance in the outside, and bad dancers dance in the inside
so nobody can see them”
Most milongas in Buenos Aires have at least 2 lines of tables (so do
dance halls in all Latin countries I’ve been to), 1 against the wall and
one against the dance floor with an isle in the middle, this is
necessary so people that are not dancing (and workers) can walk and not
interrupt dancers or spill drinks.
You may have encounter the problem with the lack of a middle isle, if
you have danced at the Mercury Café in Denver or at the Viscount
Ballroom in Portland, dancers and pedestrian often collide with each
other. An unnecessary problem (in my book).
